So I checked out the dizzy today and was testing the spring back of weights by pulling back the rotor and releasing. Well, the rotor does NOT spring back 100%. I took 3 photos showing the movement.

1st photo - pulling the rotor back
2nd photo - released the rotor and minimal amount of springs back
3rd photo - pushed rotor forward for full travel

Based on my results it appears the weights are NOT springing back like they should which may be why the engine is pinging???

Steven, As a process of elimination...
Jam a set of points in and run it.
In theory. if the weights are "stuck" it should still ping--even with points.
If no ping, then the dwell in the Pertronix may be a tad aggressive.
If you prefer to run your distributor,do a re-curve on it seeing that you have to take it apart to free up the weights anyways.
If you have to swap out dizzys...
My personal preference is the Summit Racing electronic conversion kit. #850004
The distributor in that kit has the perfect curve for today's gas and comes with an orange box,and wiring for under 200. bux

Hope this helps.

Took two summers to get her running, now I need another to stop her,LOL!
Disc brakes coming up this summer.

Hahaha. We both did the complete opposite... I have discs & new suspension and can stop, but I just Don't have a good running engine to go!!

I haven't installed the pertronix igniter II I initially got. I wanted to diagnose the ignition problem b4 installing it otherwise I'd be running in circles. Since I believe the vac advance diaphragm was leaking and now that I found the weights are binding I'm going to swap out my dizzy for that 850004 from Summit. In a prior post I mentioned I was going to install a Proform, but I meant the 850004 as you suggested. The proform and Summit look the same (they may just as well be..dunno for sure), but the Proform is $50 less.

Btw, the 850004 comes with the Blue box (already ordered), the 850003 comes with the Orange, but isn't for a 383.

My Summit 850004 is in a box waiting to be installed. Hoping to get rid of a pinging issue I have too, and rid my life of crappy Chinese made condensers.

Oh,crap...I forgot about that.It is important to put back the insulation wrapped in tin foil.

Has anyone made up the tin foil insulation wrap? Just some fiberglass & tin foil to reduce tappet noise... correct?

I just wrap pink insulation in tinfoil. Main purpose is blocking the heat from intake...and reducing noise, lol.

For some reason my 850004 kit came with an orange box for my 68 383..Hhmmm..I am assuming they were out of blue boxes when I placed my order just before Christmas. No matter since the curve in the dizzy is more important.

Well, I'll just have to see which color I get

66tc - I dunno how cold it is out in san Francisco, but here in dfw I only need the choke when cold starting it from an overnight sit or whatever. if you do a manual choke on a wire its cheap to do.

BTW Salor, do you have a pic of a carb with a manual choke cable. I want to see how I can jimmy one up.

Hey Saylor, do you or anyone have a pic of a carb with a manual choke cable. I want to see so I can jimmy up a bracket a cable to make one work.

cbarge, I got my 850004 this morning and I got the orange box too!

You got any install tips or is it just 'plug 'n play'?

Are you running the original single field alternator?? or newer dual field?
The kit would work better with the modern dual field style.
Having good ground for the ECU is the key.
As for installation, for years the web lots of diagrams to refer to for install and in the kit itself.
No tricks there. .

Thanks... so you're saying there's No need to search the web for more info - the included instructions are sufficient, correct?
