I am just spit-balling for the future here guys. I have a '93 fuel injected 5.2 magnum engine with an overdrive 46RH tranny complete with harness already in storage. I think this would make a great combination for my Newport for daily driving. Because it is pre OBD2 MPFI it should be very easy to make it work in my old car.You can get a pump/tank module from Holley that mounts in the engine bay so you don't have to deal with changing much of the old fuel system. With the right gears I think it would work very well. I plan to run the car as is this summer to finally get some enjoyment out of it and then fix all the rust and paint it next winter. Your thoughts and opinions are very much appreciated!

I agree, these drivetrains have proven themselves a million times over.

This is a combo I have been seriously considering for a number or reasons, not only would the vehicle deliver better mileage but on the highway it will have more pickup and go than the original 318 2bbl that sometimes came in these cars. I believe the 318 magnum is comparable in power to the 383 motor. It also gives you the option of putting 3.55's in the rear too which would certainly give it some perkier performance. Personally I think it is a very serious proposition.

It has been done to a C before and is well documented
Google POLARACO
Steve Hobby transformed his 72 Polara into an excellent road machine with a FI Magnum and overdrive tranny.
I know --I DROVE the car myself.Lots of power,MPG in the 20's.
He still has the car and is on the road year round.

Go for it. Just in case you decide not to use your current body you can always find another one here that has had it's 440 removed.

When i get money (read wife let me) i will do 727->46RH + Ultrabell swap behind my 383.

Go for it and document the swap.

I've been saying that we see all kinds of really nice C-body cars that have been stripped of their engine/trans and it would be great to have an affordable way to resurrect those cars and update at the same time.

If any1 know cheap resource for A518/RH series transmissions, let me know... :)

sorry. i'm going disagree with everyone one these guys. every time i have to fix some module related, wiring, relay, electric fuel pump, sensor, can line, ecm pcm bcm scr idm icp, electrical bullshit problem at work, i think of my breaker pointed, mechanical voltage regulated '65. starts, runs, drives perfect. i commute with it. it just can't get simple enough and i would never change it. SG

Wow...I guess that's a definite yes! I am going to do some research on "Polaraco" and see what he did get everything to work. The biggest problem will be physically fitting the tranny into the car and fabricating a proper mount for it. It is much larger than a 727. How much do you guys think a freshened up 383 4bbl/727 is worth?

I see where you are coming from, but multi-port fuel injection is so, so far superior to carburetors IMHO.
