1978 NYB Preservation Project....Sort of

You're not going to believe this!!!

I get a phone call from SMS about noon today.

They said that they burnt the PB3 Blue Levant vinyl that they had and they sent PB3 Blue (I think) Elk vinyl top to me until they can get more the correct vinyl back in the stock.

So today I get the the vinyl top and it's blue. I didn't even bother to unfold yet to see if it's cut and put together right. I don't know what my decision will be. Time is running out and I have other work to get done on the NYB if I'm going to be able to bring it to Carlisle. I don't know how much of a difference the Elk pattern will make.

What do you guys think?

My NYB is far from being anywhere near factory correct and never will be.

I kinda like the elk pattern better.

But... WTF? I don't get what they are thinking. Do they think you can just change it?

Your call... There's the principle of it or you could put this top on and sell the next one if you ever get it.

I'm thinking that too.

I can bring the car to Carlisle with the Elk top and get a hands on survey from the FCBO crew to stick with this one and sell the other top.

2 STRIKES ALREADY!

I may be getting a free top later....

It might look good on Stan's NYB. LOL!
Ouch... he will give you a red X for that one...

You may as well go for the Gator grain... pimp it out...

I think the Elk will look good, as long as they cut it right this time. They definitely do suck at this... maybe they should try something else.

You know if I had to say what would most likely come on the car and I didn't know anymore other than a late model New Yorker I would have guessed the Elk pattern. To me the Elk would seem at home on a higher end full size car and the levant on a lower end full size car. Levant happens to be on both my Parklane and Polara. As for my Cougar it had a vinyl top put on by the dealer. That meant my top was already painted and the material used was found on 1968 Thunderbirds. I may have the only SeaFoam Green Cougar with a green boar vinyl top in a sea of black and white tops. Technically not correct but on the car 1 week after being built.

I'm confused, I'm not sure which they are you now... I think my 78 has the Levant, I'll check in the morning. I think they use the elk more in padded roofs because it looks more stretchy. But that's just my thought.
Please let us know.

One person in a million would know if you had the correct pattern on it or not.
My vinyl was dealer installed. I have no idea if the pattern is correct or not and I don't care. It's not even a factory color. And to date, nobody has ever said, Yuck, what a ucking fugly car you have because the top isn't factory correct.
If the color is right, use it.

Thanks to the thread, now a few more... Who cares, If you like the look of it, Bob, use it and never give it a second thought. Have them make the freebie in black for an easier sale. If they give you a small back window black one I may even know someone dumb enough to buy it for inventory.

Do what ever you think will make you happy, no one reasonable is going to hate your car because of it.
