Hi, I'd like to get opinions on coil usage. The restro Mopar coil is unavailable at a decent price, I believe something happened because they were available @49.00, now no one has them and if they do, they sell for well over $100.00. Is there any problem with a points distributor using a Flame Thrower coil? Thanks-you

Standard Products OEM replacement.
Must be 165 quadrillion of them out there with many, many, miles on them.
Don't get sucked in by sexy ads in magazines. They are all crap.
Many here will disagree with me.

I've had great luck with Pertronix... but then I only ran one with points for a very short period before switching to igniter.

First, tell us how you use the car. Normal Sunday drives? Trips to the strip?

As to the coil you mentioned, my best guess is that Mopar has run out of stock and is in the process of debating who the next supplier authorized to build the coil will be. They'll be trying to squeeze the best possible price out of the vendor and sometimes this back and forth takes a while to sort out.

Not sure how well a set of points will be at tolerating a whole lot more voltage than they were designed for. I'm thinking you should be expecting shorter service life. If you want to keep everything looking stock, then consider a Pertronix (sp?) kit.

The car will be used for street driving. I have no intentions of taking a 67 Imperial down the strip[

Oh, C'MON! You don't even have to push her and she'll win purely on style.

Stock Distributor - Stock Coil, just go down to you local parts store and get the generic replacement, I have never had a problem with this.

Unless your engine compartment looks like this you probably don't need the resto coil.

If you do use the Pertronix coil or some other aftermarket coil, you may need to add an extra ballast resistor. If the primary resistance of the aftermarket is quite a bit less than the factory coil you will have to. You might be able to hide the extra resistor up under a fender or some other place where it can't make anything too hot.
