    67 383 rebuild suggestions

I whole heartedly agree. FWIW, I replaced the 2bbl and intake on my convertible shortly after I bought it, 15 years ago. I bought a package from Mancini Racing that consisted of the Edelbrock 1406, Edelbrock intake, and a crappy air cleaner. Upgraded the air cleaner to an Edelbrock w/K&N...

    Gas Tank Sending Unit

FWIW, I put the rear wheels on ramps which gave enough access to the sending unit for removal to replace a bad float. I used the new gasket and original locking ring with good results on another Newp when installing a new sender, meaning no leaking. Hope the input helps. John

67' 300 side pipes, yay or nay

Two things to think about with side pipes: 1. Burnt legs. 2. Exhaust coming in open windows. My 4DSD had dual exhaust dumps just in front of the rear wheels when I bought it. The mufflers were just shy of straight pipes, way too loud for my taste. With the rear windows open, I would get...

    Transmission other that 727

I'm way late to this thread, but FWIW, Jay Leno has a '67 Imperial. In the video for it he said that the 727 is the best automatic transmission-ever. Love him or hate him, he knows cars. Hope the input helps. John

    383 Dies Mid-Drive

I would agree with others that you need to determine if it is fuel or ignition related. What is the condition of the entire fuel delivery system? Is the fuel percolating due to it running hot/overheating? Fuel pump pushrod might be worth inspecting. Hope the input helps. John

New to me 67 Fury VIP, few issues...

All of my '67 Newports have two vents facing forward. More than likely yours is the same. I don't know about California smog cars. Sounds like the sending unit and/or the rubber hose connections are compromised. If you get the rearend up on ramps or stands, you can see everything. You can get...

    Help with diagnosis

Start with the simple things: Is the belt tight enough? Check the alternator output with a meter. And then there is the smart *** answer that my friend gives me for mechanical issues: "You could wash it" John

    Going from a 2bbl to a 4bbl on a 383

I put this combo on the 383 in my convertible 12 years ago. I've never done a thing to it since installation. Starts reliably and added some punch. If your 2bbl carb is not worth rebuilding, you may want to consider a Stromberg 2bbl as a cost cutter for now. Four of my Newps have them and they...

It goes to the heater controls. The blend doors are vacuum actuated. John

    Engine slow return to idle.

Check the return spring on the throttle linkage. May be stretched/worn. John

    383 Poor Idle

Use engine oil, WD40 won't be thick enough. Best thing to use is an old fashioned pump oil can or a squeeze bottle with a fairly small tip. John

    383 Poor Idle

If it was my car, I would try the compression test with oil again. If it doesn't point to the rings, then try the ATF treatment. The worst that will happen is you waste a quart of ATF and some of your time. But the smoke show will be entertaining. And if it runs well enough to cruise, then...

    383 Poor Idle

This is a little late to say, but: If you add a shot of oil to each cylinder and test again it will give you more info about the rings. If the low cylinders jump up, then you probably have ring issues. Hope the input doesn't depress you. John

I might be interested in that if furyfever isn't. Thanks, John

    383 Poor Idle

I have a few "other ideas": 1. Check the choke pull off for proper operation/vacuum. And the linkage and spring mounted to the intake. If either of these are marginal, it will idle rich which can manifest as a miss. Any black smoke at cold or warm idle? A gloved hand over the tailpipe will show...

Gas puddle from tank vent line

Gas puddle from tank vent line

Sounds like some clarification is needed. 1. Knebel, is your filler behind the rear license plate? 2. rags, are you using your '65 300 as a reference? If so, where is the filler? 3. If the tank and cap are vented, and the filler is behind the license plate, fuel will slosh rearward on...

Gas puddle from tank vent line

If you have vent lines on the tank, the cap should be non-vented. The only time I see fuel on the ground with any of the Newps is when something is leaking. Check all of the lines, hoses, and connections. Hope the input helps. John

    PS003 PS bracket. help/info wanted

After looking at your pics again, it looks like you can probably "persuade" the bracket to reach the holes in the pump. Hope the input helps. John
