My 1970 Fury III Convertible has a Chrysler 2-Speed windshield wiper motor. When I turn the wiper switch off, the motor returns the wipers to lowest position in their wiping arc, but does not park them. According to the 1970 FSM, it is supposed to have a park cam that moves the wiper arms to the concealed position when the switch is turned off. Since the wipers return, but don't fully park, I believe the cam mechanism is broken. NAPA, Rock Auto, and Autozone do not list any wiper motor for 70 Fury. Advance lists a Cardone unit, but it looks like a 3-speed that isn’t the right 3 speed. Ebay has 2-speed motors, Cardone 40-350, for Valiant,Belvidere, and Satellite models. These motors are like mine and leave the wiper arms in the lowest positon of the wipe pattern. I could not find any 2-speed Fury wiper motors on ebay.

I also have a Chrysler 3-Speed wiper motor and 3 speed switch. The mount and engine compartment wiring are the same. However, on dash wiring, FSM, page 8-89 states, “3-speed motors have a high speed resistor mtd on the switch and a resistance wire in the harness for medium speed.” 3-speed dash wiring and switches are different.

The two windshield wiper motors are pictured. The 2-speed is smaller and has a ballast type resistor. The 3-speed mounts the same but is larger because of the cylindrical extension to the left.

My Questions

If I mount the 3-speed motor, how would the motor work with the 2-speed dash wiring and the 2 speed switch? Could I just have high and low with no medium speed?

Another option is to have my 2-speed rebuilt and the parking cam repaired. Can anyone recommend a rebuilder?

Another thought is to alter the dash wiring to accommodate the 3 speed switch. What is involved?

Of course, I'm willing to apply other tests, so all advice is appreciated.:sSig_thanks: DSCN8330.jpgDSCN8324.jpgDSCN8323.jpgDSCN8332.jpg

Give Kim and she'll tell you more than you ever wanted to know about wiper motors. She may have the cam and or the bushings too.

I think I have both 2 and 3 speed wiper motors .. definitely have 3 speeds. I can't help or wiring though.

I did look right at one that looked like this yesterday when I was at the storage so it may be the correct 2 speed

I'd find a shop in your fair city that re-builds electric motors like alternators and the like and take your two speed with you when you go to visit and tell them what its doing and not doing. If they're good at what they do your out of it for way way less then that evil-bay shark iz asking. I have a simple question I ask those types of sharks AND low-ballerz when I find at swap meetz but this iz ah family friendly site so I'll stay nice. BTW, Cardone iz not your friend and won't be 'til they start paying their help more then street people wages and find and pay for quality employeez, Jer

3 spd won't work with 2 spd wiring. they won't shut off. tried that myself. the resistor on the switch is a little rectangular block on the lower corner of the switch. with the resistor on the switch, i don't see why they couldn't be made to work though.

Did the 3 speed motor work correctly with a 3 speed switch and 2 speed wiring? or did you go back to 2 speed motor?

I agree that the ebay item is ridiculously priced. I posted it because I was shocked that anybody could be such a chiseler. My zero cost option is to make the 3-speed I have work. It was working 10 months ago and has been in my garage since. I'm going to try that 1st. Then I'll look at the local rebuilder. One nice thing about the 2-speed: it is a lot smaller, but I have a feeling that the construction of the 3-speed is a lot more heavy duty. And the engine compartment wiring and firewall connector for both is exactly the same. The hitch with the 3-speed is the dash wiring.

I'm planning to go from 2 speed to 3 speed myself and I'm pretty sure Kim told me the only thing I needed to change was the wiper cam .. diff cars have diff cams .. 2 speed and 3 speed. She told me the wiring would work and that I just had to have the right cam and a 3 speed switch.

The one I'm working on is a 68 Coronet though .. not C body.

i can't remember for sure, but the wiring from the motor itself is different. it will plug in the bulkhead okay though. can't remember if there is an extra wire on the switch or not.

The 1970 FSM instrument panel wiring diagram shows one extra wire from the switch to the firewall connector. This wire has its own firewall terminal. The switch also has an additional external resistor wire. I'll try to post a picture. The wiring from the 2 motors looks exactly the same to me, same 4 colors and the firewall connectors are exactly the same.

I called Kim and left a message. I thought the cam was internal to the motor. I've got the switch.

I think i said the wrong thing .. I mean the arm that goes from the motor to the wiper arm assembly .. it will have a squarish hole in it and it has to be clocked correctly to the application

Kim will help

3-Speed Switch

I didn't hear back from Kim yet. In the meantime, here are some pictures of the 3-speed switch. Supposedly the gray resistor makes it different. I believe the medium speed wire goes to the terminal spade at the end of the wire off the gray resistor. Not positive though. If the 3 speed switch really is compatible with 2 speed wiring, then that spade might insert into an empty cavity in the 2 speed connector and the only thing sacrificed is medium speed. Changing the wiring is also another option, but I'd rather not do that in case I decide to go back to 2-speed.

Bryan: In the linkage picture, this is the 3-speed piece you mentioned. So it's different from the 2-speed linkage at the wiper motor?

BTW: what do you think of Chrysler's wire crimps? Are these factory?

There are far more of those crank arms (that's what they are called) among the same type of cars but diff model year and 2 vs 3 speed it will blow your mind. From what I learned researching what I needed and talking to her the arms look very simliar but the clockig of that squarish hole is diff and particular to the application. Did you know there were also variable speed motors too ?

Check this list out the reference info her on wiper motors etc http://passion4mopars.wordpress.com/ .. she's got crank arm part numbers somewhere too but i couldn't find it quickly

I wouldn't bother with the other ref links other than the wiper stuff she has posted.

Thanks for the link. I checked out the posting. I might be able to use the 2nd part of her instructions for a bench test, if I put the motor beside the car and run the jumpers. I'll have to connect the crank and watch to see if it parks. Her 2-speed to 3-speed conversion post didn't mention c-bodies, only B and E, but I could install the entire linkage from the 3 speed car.

You may only need the crank arm .. again it's the clocking of the hole that makes the diff, which may be easier depending on how far apart you are taking it

everything looks right on the switch. the grey block is the resistor. i don't remember having to change the arm on the motor or the linkage. the service manual has instructions on how to bench test the motor.

I think the switch looks OK too. The windshield wiper project is on the back burner for now, because of other projects. I'll try to report my progress when I get back to it.
