I thought I'd start a thread about my Polara and the ongoing evolution of the project it is. A little back story on the car.

The brothers I lived with a decade ago were talking about getting a car and a boat from this kinda burnt out guy named Lance. A 1966 Polara and a 1976 Lund Tri-hull with a 1500 Mercury outboard. Lance had the car for a while and the carb came off and it wasn't running when the boys got it. They tossed around ideas and decided to sell to help build one brothers 73 Barracuda. So out comes a guy named Ben to take a look, liked the Barracuda as well, but brought the Polara home on a trailer, with only 2 ratchet straps, wheels against the front of the trailer. I called him once or twice and he talked about chopping the roof! I told him to call me if he wanted to sell. He forgot my number but remembered where I worked so he stopped by there. I took a look and the car had received a battery, carb, and air cleaner. Ben might be a little toasted too, as he didn't remember what he paid. Me being a stand up guy gave him what he paid, $1700. Maybe it was too much, maybe not, I didn't care as I was making payments since I didn't have that amount handy. Got it paid off and brought it to my buddy's place where it could be stored inside. Got it the following spring and took her home. Since then, I took out the tired 383 for a 400 I had, then took that out for a 440, I swapped rims and tires, going backwards to poly-glas but now it had slots! I did put another 440 in as the first one was never broke in correctly by the previous owner. I tried to replace the rings on one side as they were letting oil go by pretty good, but it was a band aid, at least the car for me home. I found out what a ticking noise can lead to! (It just started ticking that day, on that particular drive)

As noted in another thread, I got a complete interior that is in much better shape than the incorrect front bench, torn rear seats. New to me door panels and a nice headliner. And it's blue! I want even thinking about blue for interior, black or red, cause if I ever paint the car, I was thinking silver. Blue works with silver, at least for me it does. I need to do the headliner but that will have to wait til I replace the windshield.

This car was meant to be a flipper, get it running right and sell it to raise funds for my 67 Dart. Well, that never happened. 440 #1 was for the Dart, and so is the transmission I have in the Polara now, and same thing for the current 440. I guess it grew on me. One of the brothers tipped me off to a 66 Monaco sitting in a yard nearby, that my buddy swore had nothing Mopar at all, and I managed to score a front bumper. I got a 73 D200 and a 71 Newport also, got them out of there and was making payments for the Monaco. Had $100 to go and they crushed it! Called the gal wondering why when I had paid most of it off, to hear, "you got parts off it, right?" A bumper, for $300? ($400 the way I figure, neither of us had anything written down properly, live and learn). They kept other cars, what was so hard about dragging mine over to the "keep" pile? Oh well.

I found a four door 66 up where I go hunting and took LL the parts off it I thought I could use, got me a better bumper, a grille and a ton of little things. Sold that stuck 383/727 to some guy and his kid for their Duster, recycling, ya know.

The first year I had the car, I was coming back from my weekend job, and a deer jumped in front of me from behind a hedge, Wham! Deer **** down the front fender and some other scratches. Deer died. Made me feel a little better. Fast forward to a few years ago, and I see these deer running for their lives, and they are headed right at me! I hit the brakes, which need some help, and hit one square in the grille at @ 40mph. Killed the deer, didn't make me feel better at all. The newer grille I had was the best one I had, and now it had a hole in it and my bumper was pushed in, and the hood! Just enough to make it no good. Because of those furry fellas, the car has an unofficial nickname, the Deer Slayer.

So in my pursuit of getting things fixed on the car I've raided all the drivetrain components for my Dart, possibly rims and tires, and money as well. I wouldn't have it any other way. I love this car. I love that it doesn't have shiney paint, and I can park it anywhere and not care. I do hate the inoperable quarter windows and the fact the rear window leaks, but I liked it so much I tattooed the emblem on my calf muscle.

I'll be getting a 66 Polara 500 parts Carin the spring that will give me a correct dash, console, and one correct bucket seat. I bought 2 from Murray Park many moons ago in preparation for the swap to buckets/console. I should get some window regulators that work better, I hope, and some other miscellaneous things, mostly trim as the car has been sitting for a loooong time in the dirt. Engine seized so that will be yanked out and sold off.

I'll post some pics up in a few minutes, but for those who don't know, here's my Polara:

As I bought it, except rear wheels which were added right after I hit the first deer

Stored hard the first couple of years, i never liked the feeling of it.

440 #1 swap.

Mocking Jeff's dual quad tunnel ram intake he made in school, if only...

On the road again with a 440 for power and a strong 727 behind it. Look at those shiny wheels!

New home with new shoes.

And the engine troubles. Got two fouled plugs on the drivers side, and I thought I'd re-ring that side. I also replaced the crank bearings for the connecting rods.

New Pictures 174.jpg

Little did I know, this engine meant for my Dart (finally after all these years) would end up between the fenders of the Polara.

New Pictures 593.jpg

At least I had some fun before the engine went to crap. This was the just before I moved in with Laura. I actually stored the car there for the winter and the moved in. She deserves a lot thanks for dealing with my car hobby.

IMG_2093.JPG

And another .484 purple grind camshaft and matching lifters donated from a master mechanics friend, too much for his taste with his 57 Plymouth. Thanks Denny!

New Pictures 595.jpg

All put back together. Those Stealth heads look stock, right? Still running the Holley as I had no issues and it ran well, even though it's a double pumper.

IMAG0675.jpg

Aw ****, cant drive anywhere with a crappy radiator. Luckily, there was still a radiator shop in town, and after going there, i can see why it's gone, it was scary! But he fixed it for real cheap, and was honest it was only a band aid for a short time. It did get me through the season, just barely.

The preferred view I try to offer the neighbors.

Since I could drive it again, I took it for a photo shoot.

The last run with 440 #!. 11/19/2012

IMAG0762.jpg

Fitting we stopped by the cemetery that day.

IMAG0767.jpg

The joys of having a small two car garage. I had 12-18 inches to the front of the bumper to work with. I waited til April to replace the engine as I have no heat in that tinderbox I call a garage.

IMAG0853.jpg

440 #2 in a month later.

IMAG0950.jpg

Back on the road again, sort of. I put in the .484 cam and lifters and also swapped in a 2500 stall converter. The car didnt like to run with the Holley, no matter what i did. I'm not the best at tweaking a four corner adjustable carb, so I swapped it out for an Edelbrock 750 AFB and got it pretty close. My mechanic friend who gave me the cam dialed it in the rest of the way.

I added an oil pressure gauge, albeit a cheap one, better than nothing.

IMAG1039.jpg

The first granddaughter to like my car. Notice the sweet mirror I got off one of my parts cars? toobad the hole are opened enough that it only stays on for a few miles.

IMAG1048.jpg

On the way back from the big Mopar show near me, Mopars in the Park. Ran great, even though I was nervous. By this point it had gotten too rough for Laura to ride in, the bench seat from an AMC was terrible and didn't help any.

IMAG1063.jpg

I love having a car I can drive in the rain. No worries whatsoever, unless I have to do a panic stop. New rims and tires are on the list!

IMAG1089.jpg

So after getting the car back on the road I checked out the old 440 for clues. This is what i found.

Bent valves in the Stealth heads, no good.

Now, I've never had a premonition before, but I did on 9/4/2013. As I was swinging my feet out of bed, and before they hit the floor, I thought, "I'm going to wreck my car today". I had planned on going shortly after I got up, but waited til around 4:00 to go out. I hit the previously mentioned deer and this is the result. It isn't that bad, but this was a pretty nice grille, and it sucked having to piece it back together, but thankfully I had spare pieces to get one built.

Back as good as I could get it. Sucks the hood got tagged. I have two spares and a third coming so I'll be okay.

Now that you started a build thread you have to keep working on it or else:poke:
My friend used to tell me "One bolt a day" so I try to keep at it. I've gotten use to working 60 hours a week and working on the car some when it needs it. One year the awesome rendering plant was belching its stench so bad, I couldn't be outside much more than a few minutes. Two years ago we had mosquitos so bad I had to get 99% DEET bug repellent. That was fun watching the little buggers stay a few feet away from my head as I worked.

I have a lot on my plate for this upcoming year. After Mopars in the Park at the beginning of June, the Polara comes home and the real fun begins, swapping out the old stub frame for a better one. But, I want to get my Dart on the road so I have an old Mopar to drive. Just a simple K frame, engine and transmission install as well as changing out the interior, should be a breeze, right?

And I'm going to quit drinking beer. Not because it's a problem, but because I'm trying to funnel as much money to the fleet to get them roadworthy. It sucks having a car for 20 years and recalling one trip to the gad station, and a bunch of passes around the block. I'm also taking my regular raise I'll get, 2-3%, plus the 5% increase they are giving across the board due to raising starting pay. And hopefully I can get my Level 3 at work for an additional 7.5% sometime early in the year. Could be close to 5k devoted to my cars. we will see how it all works out.

Here's the Wonder Dog Tasha, enjoying a ride with me. She loved going for a ride with me, especially in this car, cause she knew I'd have the window down for her! Miss ya riding buddy, I'll see you again!

IMAG1233.jpg

IMAG1234.jpg

As you can see, thanks to limited space and outdoor stuff, and the kids stuff outside, the garage gets very cramped and the Dart and Polara become shelving. It sucks, it feels like admitting defeat. That money I'm funneling away will also help go towards building permanent storage for the whole fleet, and leave the garage for simple parking during the warmer months. Until we can replace the garage with something nicer, as Laura and I have come to the conclusion that we aren't moving anywhere, anytime soon. She likes her house (I do to) and we've put a lot into it the last couple of years.

IMAG1433.jpg

This is from a few years ago, but similar results. Now the car is at my storage unit holding replacement parts all over it.

So I then went on to redoing the front suspension.

The neighbors gotta love the view, my car in a constant state of repair!

IMAG1651.jpg

I had to make my own tool to size, using my buddy's A/B/E body tool as a guide, to get my pivot shafts out of the control arm. Thought I'd make it bigger so I had room to spare, I maybe had 1/2" extra, but it worked flawlessly.

IMAG1685.jpg

The first pivot shaft came out with the bushing on it, grinder did the rest. The other shaft not so much, but I got it out very carefully destroying it!

IMAG1695.jpg

IMAG1687.jpg

Old sway bar link bushings, one side was floating outside of the link.

IMAG1697.jpg

All fixed up and ready to go!

IMAG1709.jpg

Back on the road.

IMAG1718.jpg

Decided to swap in the forward pattern manual valve body I had laying around for the Dart. Found some crap in the pan when I dropped it.

IMAG1733.jpg

Forgot to remove the spring, I reinstalled it. Damn did it shift HARD! went home, read the instructions in my B&M kit, "oh yeah, that makes sense". Took it out and slapped it back together. Shifts firm but not as obscenely as before, it was violent!

IMAG1732.jpg

What would it look if I jacked up the rear for some taller tires?

IMAG1736.jpg

My car at work, very common after salt is cleared and snow isn't down.

IMAG1737.jpg

Crudely mocking up what a tall 66 RO/WO scoop would look like, if I ever need it for some tall intake.

Tasha, making sure I'm working, and nobody messes with the Polara. She'd sit under the front end while I was in the garage.

The following spring in 2015, I had had enough of my POS cobbled together exhaust system and ordered a full 3' tti exhaust kit with their ceramic coated C Body headers. I intentionally cut my old system so I knew nobody would ever suffer that misery.

IMAG2456.jpg

IMAG2496.jpg

Had to cut the old trailer hitch off, bummer.

IMAG2501.jpg

I like the kit, but wish they could have shipped it better. It came in one box and the majority of the pipes had a dent at the slip connector.

IMAG2519.jpg

Almost there.

IMAG2532.jpg

Had to shave some material off a nut to get it to fit. I tried to make it work, but it didn't. Also had to drill trough my rear frame rails to mount the bracket. Whatever they sent me was not up to the task. Even had to notch the gas tank flange so the bolt would fit. Minor pitfalls for a universal kit.

IMAG2530.jpg

IMAG2537.jpg

IMAG2542.jpg

Everything looks good up here.

IMAG2544.jpg

But alas, the idler arm and center section are rubbing. Ugh. Got some shims from Schumacher Creative Services and solved the problem. Sucks to scrape a new set of headers before they've even been used once, but I got over it quickly.

IMAG2468.jpg

After that I slapped the tail pipe on and went driving! I love it, no more exhaust flowing through the car, the sound is out the back of the car, and I can hear someone next to me.

Showing off at a mixed make car show.

I got back from hunting one year to a dusting on the car, time to go inside.

IMAG3303.jpg

Out the next spring getting ready for the season.

IMAG4121.jpg

I lost my garage parking when we brought home Laura's dad's car, a 1956 Mercury Medalist needing a full brake job. Good thing I had storage already.

IMG_1490.JPG

This year was kind of slow for the Polara as I worked on the Medalist.

Project Sidetrack

Then I got my parts car from Omaha.

Project Sidetrack 2

Summary, I was going to use the front stub frame, fenders, hood and whatever better parts it had, along with the correct front bench for the car, finally. Then I looked inside and saw the whole interior was pretty nice, so out it came and I have everything but the dash and headliner installed, even the seat belts. Aside from a small patch on one fender, everything I took looks good. I even sold and gave away some parts to members here, yeah, I'm a recycler.

The car was off the road for about a month, back together the day of an informal car get together, fittingly. A month later back to the all makes show, that was a very nice day and I took an extended cruise home.

Nice looking Polara, Scott! I really like it just the way it is :)

It looks super solid. Did you have to put any work into floor boards/trunk floor?
