Well, I pulled the trigger on a complete re-manufactured performance crate engine for my 1978 NYB from Carolina Machine Engines out of South Carolina.

It'll be a 400 Horsepower B-Engine 400. Compression ratio 9.50:1, cast iron heads, complete from intake manifold to oil drain plug.

Only problem is it will take 12-15 weeks to manufacture and ship. That is a bummer but worth the wait.

Then.....all I have to do is routine maintenance and wash and wax her for the next 20 years.

And find a set of roof rail seals.

I should of checked on it last year with the 12-15 build time. Oh well.....

How's that work? Do they need your engine as a core?

No core for a performance crate engine.

The engine currently in the NYB is great. It just needs to be rebuilt. Probably still has the nylon timing gears in it and the valve guides are shot. Leaking oil. 65,000 miles on it. I've driven that car to Green Bay and back to Baltimore more than a half dozen times.

Probably could get it freshened up, and keep it for the Newport or sell it to help offset the cost of the new one.
I wonder where they get the blocks from for one of the motors or are they new?

Yeah, I could of rebuilt it but I wanted a little more power and a warranty. So....I'm going from 210 HP to 400 HP. And it is still a daily driver and has vacuum for the brakes.

I will ask next time I talk to them. Yes, I'll probably offer the old engine here first once I have the new engine in and running.

Congratulations, Bob, I'm happy for ya ,but.....

12-15 weeks???? Nooo, that doesn't sound right...
Why did you choose this shop?

BBB has an A+ rating for this business. And the customers feedback was good. They have remanufactured 50,000 Mopar engines since 1984. I didn't see any terrible feedback. There is 100 engine orders ahead of me causing the wait time.

I may call them back Monday and add aluminum cylinders heads.....i'll have to think about it over the weekend. It'll be the last time I replace an engine in this car.

Why the aluminum heads Bob? With the extra ponies I don’t think the weight difference will really slow you down much.

Also? How much is that little gem going to run you? If you don’t mind.?

I just went through their website. Very impressive. I would have done the same.
Screw it, Bob, you just spent a gazillion bucks on truck bling. Go with the aluminium heads,

Aluminum heads helps with the compression and detonation. I don't care about weight.

$5k with cast iron heads. I'm figuring another $1500 for the aluminum heads. This is a complete engine from aluminum intake to the oil drain plug.

I've been been researching for a while. Jasper would of been my 2nd choice but they make it difficult requiring you to go through a vendor. I guess I could of created Combat Bob's Garage and Strip Club and be my own vendor.

I was going to applaud your iron head decision but congrats whichever way you go!

Unfortunately I'm still stigmatized by the mismatch of aluminum heads and the cast iron blocks from the 70's and all their nightmares LOL.
I'd stick with the cast irons. Just me...

You're not going to be pulling wheel stands at the track are you? Lol

I'm going to go all out on this build. New everything.

Where can I get motor mounts from?

Interesting decision. I fully understand the desire for a "drop-in" situation.

As I suspect they'll be searching for a buildable core, you might need to look at your accessory mountings on the existing engine to ensure that they get a core with the same attachments. I know this sounds "not needed, they're all the same", BUT a few years ago, a customized Sierra wagon came through our shop. It had developed a lower engine knock, so an "engine" was procured from an unknown source. Same 440 displacement, but the accessory mounts were all different, which also included a few which needed a matching casting difference to work.

So, they might need the casting number and date from your existing engine so they can look for a matching-casting block. I'm not sure when the castings might have changed, but from what I saw, they did.

Congrats and good luck!

Let's not get to hasty here. I don't think you should shelve that idea this early in the game. I see the house above already has a garage. With a few modifications and the right girls, this engine swap is paid for.

Seriously though, the power increase will be nice. Are you doing any other drive line changes?
