Ugh, throw this third picture away...

Those 360s were dogs. Piston was about a 1/4" down in the hole because it used a shorter stroke crank with the same piston compression height and connecting rod as a 390. Very detonation prone.

The good news is a 390 crank drops in with no other hard parts required and now you have a 390.

read my mind boss.

original mill is getting rebuilt and dialed up, with a little more block/head work plus 390 crank.

fully original appearance, higher compression/flow/rotating charactistics, 4V, dual exhaust (subtle, nothing stickin out the back), goal 100+/100+ HP and torque boost

Also need 390 rods with 390-4V pistons

I am a fan of the original turquoise/ light blue color on this one. BLack Black Black gets boring after a while.
My opinion.

A decent paint job, even from MAACO or similar, in the factory color with a white top (as many were). A work truck needs steel wheels. Maybe some of the dual-bolt-pattern Chrysler Rallyes or similar? Or Magnum500s or similar?

The short-bed Ford StyleSides on that body series, with whitewalls and wheel covers, at the factory ride height, looked something between "dainty" and "stylishly wimpy" to me. The 8-foot bed StyleSides looked "right". By comparison, the similar year C-10 short-wides looks good, plus could have a 396 to smoke the 8.25-15 narrow-tread Firestones that came standard on them (especially without a PosiTrac rear axle).

Enjoy!

Yeah hens teeth are not that easy to find, but your in Texas, nuff said. 307 power glide is more like it.
Ford always had the best truck dashboards!. Easy to read, straight forward, ash tray easy to use. No curves and clusters, with a ash tray on passenger side.

307 PowerGlides were in the definite minority down here, back then. It was much more like 350 4bbls and THM400s. Our '69 CST-10 also had hd rear springs and PosiTrac 3.73s. "Hot rod" stuff in a car, but "power and pulling" stuff in a 1/2 ton pickup. Plus ps, pb, a/c, and bucket seats. CAN'T forget the option front sway bar that kept cornering lean to a minimum.

Back in about '66, a local dirt work contractor showed up in a new C20 short-bed Chevy. V-8 and (gasp) a PowerGlide. Claimed it was easier to get "out in the field" as he could modulate the throttle better than with a clutch, in sandy soils. Add PosiTrac and it was close to 4-wheel drive without having to worry about the front hubs. Better than the old Granny 4-speed. His approval of the "car" transmission set the trend toward automatics in pickups down here, it seemed, which was happening anyway. ATF and a filter is less expensive than a clutch. BUT it all depended upon what the owner wanted.

Ford 390s in 1/2 ton pickups had the same "awe factor" as in the cars. As did the 352 before it.

But if you had a big motor with a 4-speed manual trans 3/4 ton, you had a War Horse in any brand, back then. The bigger motors didn't really appear until the '67 model year and later. Just depended on if who ordered the truck knew how to equip them "for work".

Long live '60s pickup trucks! Of ANY brand . . .

Guys ... I really am NOT a know-nuthin truck newbie. Sorry to seem that way.

I got trucks .. just not many. and like the rest of the things i like, and like many of you, i was taught to love ALL (i aint no brand snob :)) cars & trucks, at my Dad's knee.

Green is 6.5 Diesel, Red is 454. shows also my wheel/tire tendency. Like this Ford I will do, i prefer something period OEM, maybe a little more bling (a polished dog dish, bright trim ring etc) and always raised WL tires.

This truck has fd-50, without the bright, wide trim ring (ignore the truck's stance .. i wont lower my truck)

1968 F100 "Explorer" Special model .. yeah, same name endures today.

I like these caps (had police interceptors with them) .. they polish up real nice too.

now that i know 1968s had them from factory (fd-42 in post #77), combined with a THIN stainless ring and RWL (275/60s) like #78, with deep black wheels too (15x8s), i am startin' to feel it.
