Well, folks, the car is up to $3k on eBay, so the market is speaking. Given this background, I thought I'd share a couple of thoughts -- and ask @mindshark13 if he might be able to provide additional info after reading them:

1. the seller (@mindshark13) has been extremely responsive to my questions, providing all the pics -- flattering or not -- that I requested even though he knows that there is only a very small probability that I will go for the car. That counts for quite a bit in my book.

2. As for the interior, I am of two minds about whether it is original or not.
(i) I initially thought that the front seats had been redone, with a different fabric but in the original sewing pattern. However, looking at the pics below, I see hints of the brocade pattern on the bench, and I definitely see it on the front armrest.
(ii) As for the rear seat, I think that it may well be original as one can still see the brocade pattern on it.

--> Bottom line, look at the last two pics below: I initially suspected an older restoration, but now I think it may be original.

3. For me, the main question about the car is how much rust is hiding under the roof, and what has caused the deterioration of the headliner.

--> It would be great if @mindshark13could chime in and/or post close-up shots of the front and rear fabric.

4. What paperwork comes with the car?

I have a roof available if this one turns out to be ugly under the vinyl. There are probably some holes in the window channels, but the skin is good. Probably same deal on the dutchman too. I can check it closer if anyone is super serious on it.

So since there is no red stripe remaining on the car I would assume it has had a repaint

if you look closely at the pics, there are faded remnants of a stripe on the front fenders.

I just checked with Tim who has the GY5 Crystal Dawn Metallic 1971 New Yorker coupe with the standard cloth interior and it doesn't have a pull down center arm rest in the rear either, so that feature was probably only on the optional bucket seat vinyl interiors on the coupes that both of my New Yorkers have (I actually prefer the standard cloth interiors on those cars, when in the condition of Tim's car - photos below).

My E86 New Yorker from Ecorse, MI

Thus, I am inclined to agree that this gun metal car still has its original interior but faded from the Florida sunlight and it seems the foam has deteriorated as well. So it may well be the miles are original too. Those are good aspects for this gun metal gray car then.

If I were the seller, I would use a razor blade on some of the vinyl roof and peel back some sections to determine just how bad the rust bubbles or whatever is causing the bubbles really is if he wants top dollar. Otherwise, buyers will hedge their bets. Those sections could be glued back down afterward if it mattered for visual purposes of selling the car at this point.

I didn’t believe these existed anymore. Glad I was wrong.

Lots of signs of mould in the interior. Which is original, but faded & worn.

It used to be a stunner, and one could & should make it into one.

those headliners dislike humidity, I Learned that the hard way...

I also thought the interior was partially replaced. I now see the pattern, and under the front armrest you can see a colour closer to the dark buttons. I think the top was replaced at one time, and not correctly. It should not have the brougham script on the roof, or anywhere, as I'm fairly certain there were no NYB's in '71. I'd like to see some lower body, and or underbody shots. Just look at both sides! Straight as can be, and perfectly aligned, after all these years and door slams! Whoever ends up with this one is lucky.

I agree it is a very straight car - it was one of the first plusses I noted when I first saw photos of it.
Actually the crest does belong on the roof C pillar, but the added script Chrysler does not. The crest is also mounted between the tail lights and in the center of the grille. It is a New Yorker thing at least in 1971.............

All the evidence I have seen (here and in emails with the seller) suggests that this car was not messed with till the elderly previous owner passed away and his grandson decided to start playing. Sad on all counts.

I think there are three things left that I’d like to know more about: (1) how much rust there is under the roof (solved by following Steve’s recommendation), (2) what the underside looks like (I have not seen any rust but I’d wanna know for sure — solved by taking pics), and (3) the state of the engine and electrics/power toys.

Just my two cents. Good luck to the seller with the sale.

I'm very curious of those questions as well. The rust on the bottom side of the car is a huge question.

The above pic was taken yesterday. I’m not sure if I can get someone to squeeze under there today to snap a few under shots. Going to try. The motor does turn. I also folded the passenger seat back forward and noticed these seat belts tucked in as if they’d never been unrolled? Not sure if that’s what position the factory would have positioned them as it came down the assembly line?

That's Fungus on the headliner, mold is black, fungus is white.
I don't know which is worse but my guess is both.

(edit) just poodled mold vs fungus, mold is unlikely to cause disease but will trigger allergies, fungus can cause disease. Some mold can be white but here in Floriduh it's mostly black.

Being in Florida, that car has been subjected to a lot of sunlight given how faded the interior is and the crack in the dashpad that is usually not so easy to do with the 71 -73 dashpads, but it will happen in southern states. Given that the seatbelts have faded from gun metal to tan suggests they were exposed to sunlight a lot too and perhaps rolled up and placed under the top seat cushion to just keep them out of the way of cluttering up the seats since the center belts and perhaps the shoulder belt may not have been used much. The shoulder belts were kind of annoying to since they didn't release and retract when the driver leaned down to release the park brake or other lower panel functions like modern belts.

Ya, I was referring to the script only. And how it is a sign the top may have been replaced. Also, I don't think you could order the Brougham package on a 1971 New Yorker.

You definitely don't want either. Both can be cleaned/thrown away with textiles. Don't trust poodle for everything. Alot of fungus is edible and not harmful. I don't know of any mold you can say that for.

Sold! The auction closed at $4.5k. Let's hope the buyer brings her back to her former glory, and we get to see more of this car.
