I had some time this weekend so I swapped in new shocks on the Fury. Rears went in exactly to spec, although I almost couldn’t get the top bolts torqued down right enough with my my shortish 3/8 torque wrench.

On the fronts it looks like the upper bushing is different in the FSM than what comes with the new shocks and torquing the top nuts to 25lb wasn’t possible because the new rubber just kept compressing until I ruined a shock by threading the nut past the shaft threading. On the second attempt I just snugged them up to what felt reasonable.

All in all it took longer than it should, but it should be worth it.

It might be that the bushing pictured in the FSM has a metal insert in it to limit compression of the rubber, which would then make the torque spec more operable. The downside of using a bushing with a metal insert in it would be that if the rubber deteriorated from use, the bushing/insert could rub the hole it appears to lock into and enlarge it.

On the upper mount grommets, it's always a bit of a judgment call of how much to compress them . . . whether on a Chrysler or GM product with the same type of upper mount. You basically watch the amount of compression and make a judgment call before thing qush-out too much (which can limit durability, I suspect). The double-nut is a good touch.

Now you know how to do it next time!

The shocks came with the second nut and no instructions. I figured if I didn’t use it I’d die and that’s the only spot for it. So there it is.

The car seems to like functioning shocks, but it took so long to do it all the ice cream shops were closed by the time I hit the road. Better luck tomorrow.

What brand and type of shocks did you install? Just curious.

Thanks,

Also special thanks to my small Milwaukee electric impact and long extension that made holding the top rear bolt possible while using the impact.

There is also a "shock wrench" with a slot in the handle to index with the top of the shock's upper shaft. To keep the shaft from spinning as you tighten the nut to compress the upper grommets. Which can also be aided by a flat ratchet rather than a normal wrench.

I have some variant of this where it’s like a socket sleeve and then another socket inside of it. That extra grip is how I got myself in trouble trying to hit 25ft-lb from the FSM on the first attempt.
