Wyatt convinced me to destroy my 71...

This week I've had a few ups & downs dealing with the mini starter I had installed, problem being it wasn't engaging. After taking it in and out of the trans a number of times, I damaged the nipple portion that sits inside the transmission, by cracking the casting as it wasn't in 100% straight when I began to tighten it back up.
I called 440 Source an was able to have them send one to me that was a return, knowing I just needed to replace the casting section out.
They were quick to respond, and sent out the starter the same day. Other places I checked for the same mini starter had ship dates 1 to 2 weeks out.
But after I changed out the casting from the replacement, still kept having the problem with the shaft engaging, not to mention the positive battery cable clearence issues I had ran into, even with the adapter being sold on eBay. So I thought "F it" to myself, and cleaned up the old starter and put it back on the NYer. It worked fine before the car was disassembled, so it should do the trick. And it did.
Today Xenon was over and we rigged up the battery and a gas can to turn the 440HP over.
Everything went well on the first crank, second crank, and the third time she fired.
Unfortunately, the power steering pump hose blew off just as the engaging started to turn over and gave poor Xenon a shower in the stuff. I guess we can call him "Slick" now.:poke::lol:. He said luckily, the way the battery was mounted on the stub frame (see pic) prevented even more fluid from flying in his direction.
The engine sounded great and was responsive at the throttle, and can't thank @Xenon enough. Tomorrow we'll work out the bugs and get her tuned in.

Congratulations on this moment. There is always something!

For whatever reason, mini starters slipped right into my charger and Coronet but the one for my fury I had to grind on the nose of the starter a decent bit for it to fit properly into the trans. I had always figured the custom a500 must just be a touch off even though the original starter had fit.

Still planning a debut at Carlise?

If all the stars align, hell yeah. Never expected I'd be doing the shake down run on a 700 mile cruise to Carlisle though.

I had to do some grinding on one of the 10 or so I bought as well. Just wouldn't fit properly.

That's the best way. My sanded down .030 piston in a standard bore 440. Broke the cam in on Saturday, connected the shifter, clutch, and steering column. First drive in Tuesday from shop to house. Wednesday drove a few miles, changed the oil filter, Thursday finished exhaust and put it in the wind to Mopar Nats.

Just read this entire thread. Great work...and very motivating. I am personally stuck at the “replace stub frame” phase but inching closer. Looks great!!

So when are we leaving for Carlisle? What's the plan??

I work through Thursday. I think a power steering line blew right as I shut my car off at work, big white cloud of smoke, and fluid in the driver's side. I'll check it out on my break. I'm heading to Rockford and not sure if the Cicada will make the full trip or not, probably a game time decision.

You know it starts on Thursday, right?

Have you got it running yet with that cam? Just curious what manifold vacuum you are getting with a decent compression ratio. I put that cam in BIL low '77, 440 I got it up to 14"", better than the 11-12 from the 292/509. Just looking for free reference material to fill my head.

That New Yorker is one of my favorite cars on this site. Keep up the great work guys! I wish I could be at the show for many of the "reveals" that will be taking place.............:BangHead:
