1971 Fury GT, Gold, Promo Car

Ben, Take a look at this thread on MOPARS.ORG. Vehicle Order Number Code Help

Scroll down to the post by Alaskan_TA & 6bblgt. Alaskan_TA mentions that M0 at the beginning of the order number on the fender tag in 1970 early production cars means "Show Car / Sales Bank and explains that a car with this order number means that the car would have been used for some type of promotional purpose. Could the M0 order number mean the same thing for 1971 cars? 6bblgt notes that a '70 Challenger with an order number M00208 means it was the 208th assigned vehicle order number, originated internally at Chrysler. As we discussed off line your fender tag has Y16 = sales bank and the Green Canadian GT Promo has Y93 = Show Car Finish B / Less Gas and the order number starts with a B, not an M.

I'm glad Alaskan showed up. The other guy saying M means sunroof makes no sense, because my car has no sunroof. Also, it's encouraging that Y16 sales bank can be promo.

SOLD - 71 SPORT FURY GT FACTORY SHOWCAR PROMO PROJECT
You may have wondered what happened to this car. I bought it on April 15, 2019. It was 15 days away from being parted and having its roof cut off, per the previous owner deadline. See end of thread above. There are less than 10 1971 Fury GT cars known on this website out of a total production of 375 cars. I couldn't bear the thought of this one being destroyed, so I paid $4000 for the car and another $2000 to have it shipped from Washington state to Virginia. Basically, I bought it because I love fuselage Fury's and to save the car.

· History from Dan @ph23vo the previous owner: He contacted the dealer that originally sold the Canadian Promo car, (green, produced before mine) who informed him that the 2 1971 Fury GT promo cars were sold by Chrysler at auction as dealer demonstrator cars at the end of the 1971 model year. The dealer said my car, the USA promo car, was purchased and sold by a dealer in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In Colorado Springs, My Fury's engine froze and cracked and was thrown away, (supposedly, but who can prove that? Hope it's still out there somewhere). From there, the 1971 Gold Fury GT made its way to New Mexico. It appeared on a gas station lot in New Mexico sometime in the area of 1977 - 1978. By that time, it had a 383 in it. The farmer, who owned it and wrecked the passenger side, died and left it sitting on the gas station lot. The first previous owner that Dan was able to contact, said that the gas station closed in 1981 and he bought the car off the lot. The 1981 owner was able to get title to it and had it for several years before trading it to a friend also in New Mexico. This friend ran into some health troubles and sold the car as part of a lot of 10 cars to a dealer in Missouri in 2007. Dan went to Missouri and bought the car in 2007. He had been collecting NOS parts for it since, but something changed, and he had to sell. The price dropped from $8900 to $4000. I bought it. Car has been off the road since at least 1978, 43 years or more. Essentially, it needs everything.

Glad you saved it. Didn’t realize there were that few left

Close to my heart car! I had an Amber Sherwood 383 car. It was a baby sister to this one with column auto and split bench. Not a GT but a Sport. I wish I still had the photos and I think it was the formal top version. I can't wait to see your done!

There are more than 10 left. There may be 10 found referenced on this forum but if you go to the either of the Fury GT websites it is clear that there are more than 10 around. Somewhere I think CanCritter has a thread where anyone who knew about a '71 GT posted info on the ones that they know of.

I'd love Doug's input.

Sit with him under the Carlisle sun and listen to him tell stories and talk numbers. The knowledge on this board is amazing.
Will also tells great stories. Get Will and Jer together and you can't leave your chair.

Doug has said this recently in another discussion.

Fantastic source of decoding and other information

I'd love Doug's input.
I sent PM to Doug @69CoronetRT with link to page 1 of this thread. Let's see what he says on M code

I am currently wrestling with getting a 1970 door to fit right on a hit car. Exterior and hinges are the same as 1971, but the front of the door where the hinges mount is a little different. The gap is too large at the bottom at the rocker panel. 71 glass fits as long as I use 71 channels. Going to try some more adjustments today.

Both Dan (6bblgt) and Barry (Alaskan T/A) from the Moparts thread are two of the best in the hobby when it comes to things like this. You probably could not find a more complete or accurate answer to the 70 M code VONs anywhere else. I think this car has been a known promo car for a long time. I really don't think there is much question to its history or provenance.

As we discussed off line your fender tag has Y16 = sales bank and the Green Canadian GT Promo has Y93 = Show Car Finish B / Less Gas and the order number starts with a B, not an M.

This one I can speak to....certain VON codes will over ride other codes. Meaning if you have two specialty VON codes only one will be used. This is case the B, indicating built for sale in Canada, would over ride the M code

leading to the next point from page 1.....

The fender tag from the Canadian Fury GT promo car has lower serial number, 100235, which proves it was made before mine.

(The following is generally how this works for 69 and later cars. There are some nuances not addressed in the explanation) Raw car orders need to be sorted before VINs are assigned. The first thing assigned to a car is the SPD. The first sort parameter of the raw orders is the make for that factory by first letter (D's before P's. C's before Y's, etc) then the first character of the VON. Letters are sorted first then numbers meaning if you compile all of the cars assigned for a certain SPD, the lowest VINs for that day will have the lowest numbers or letters first. Meaning, cars with at B VON will be assigned a VIN before cars with an M VON. Cars with the highest VIN for a certain SPD will have the highest VONs.

The Canada promo car has a lower VIN because the VON starts with a B. It got sorted and assigned first. Export cars, E VONs, if any that day, would also have lower VINs simply because of Alpha sort order. Q (dealer demo) and T (lease) VON cars would have higher VINs than the Canada cars and M code cars. Next would be cars whose VON starts with zero and so forth.

Serial numbers have nothing to do with production. They are an administrative assignment of a number based on sorting factors.

Is there any way to determine which of the 2 '71 GT Promo cars came off the assembly line first?

Any thoughts on the Gold Promo having a Y16 sales bank car with an M VON? I would think that this would be odd.

Any other insight on these 2 '71 GT's?

Not easily. Sometimes you can tell relative order of production by broadcast sheet codes but that depends on the year and plant. That’s one reason researchers look for BS.

Think of Y16 this way.....it means someone inside of Chrysler sat down with a pad and checked the boxes in order to have a car built.

Why they ordered it could range from a specific car built for a specific person (Bob Hope wanted a new car as part of his spokesman contract), show cars built for an auto show, cars for parades or golf tournaments, promo cars to introduce the new models or sales bank cars to keep the plants running and build an inventory pool. All of these could have been ordered in house and can have additional VON codes. Y16 has numerous applications.
