Veteran's Day remembers and thanks those who wore the uniform.

Armed Forces Day remembers and thanks those who currently wear the uniform.

Easy way to sort the three. And, you don't wish someone "Happy Memorial Day". It is a day for somber reflection and thanks for those who gave their lives in battle for our Nation. Not an excuse to grill, and hit the lake.

I highly recommend going to Arlington National Cemetery and witness The Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns!

My unit.... 3rd Armored Cavalry guarded the Tomb of the Unknowns from the beginning in 1921 and guarded the Tomb through 1941. The 3rd Infantry (Old Guard) took over and guarded the Tomb ever since then.

Thanks for the tutorial. . . What about Decoration Day?

I remember Memorial Day still being called Decoration Day in the 1960's. My Grandparents called it Decoration Day and told me it was the day that Civil War Graves were decorated. I'm pretty sure the U.S Government permanently changed it to Memorial Day in 1971 and made it the last Monday in May giving it a perpetual 3 day weekend.

I often find it ironic that we ask people to give their lives for the cause of freedom, then demand we make voting "easier" so that it may be legislated away.

However, I am proud to say that my city hosts the largest Memorial Day parade outside of D.C., now in its 68th year. (Also not done with tax dollars) C-Bodies and Late-B"s should be well represented with 2 of each out of 100+ parade entries. This year, I will be driving Brigadier General Rolf E. Mammen, Commander Selfridge ANG base. If you are in the area, consider coming by for one of the parade fundraisers this Friday and the actual parade on Sunday @ 1pm.

Not to be persnickety, but Memorial Day is to recognize the war dead of all of America's wars. Veteran's Day is to recognize the living veteran. Please avoid conflating the two. They have distinct and different meaning, thanks.

As a veteran, I appreciate your sentiments.

In remembrance of my first cousin, twice removed Sergeant Ora J. Dean, who was killed in the Ardenne Forest on 22 October 1918; just three weeks shy of the Armistice taking effect, and two weeks after his 24th birthday.

And to my niece's late husband, SSGT Lance Chase who was killed in in Fallujah, Iraq by an IED explosion that destroyed his M1 Abrams tank, killing him and all but one of his crew on 22 Jan 2006.
