My new ‘64 Crown Coupe

Nice car.
I have almost it's twin in terms of the sun burned color and cut off black vinyl roof. Mine is a '66 though. It was also sold new in the Los Angeles area to a Hollywood producer. I can probably learn a lot by following your build. Already I learned the device in the trunck is a "reverb". The speakers are no longer there, so it's function was a bit of a mystery.

OK - so the first thing you need is a master cylinder that has ports that exit on the ENGINE side rather than the fender side. This is so that the brake lines don't interfere with the mounting bracket for the autopilot. They can also be serviced that way too.

The generic master cylinder number is 101475 - it's a Bendix unit. Still shown as available, but be forwarned that it sometimes gets substituted for one with bosses on both sides... NOT what you want. The one you want looks like this:

There may be clearance issues with the master cylinder lid and the servo mounting bracket - I had to notch my bracket to clear the master's lid. There may be enough room in your situation.

You will need to modify the actuator rod from the gas pedal pivot - it will need to be bent around the master, and the end cut off and cut down to permit it to poke through the autopilot's spring loaded accelerator connection point. Secure it with a washer and a cotter pin. At least, this is what needs to happen on a 65-66 C body - perhaps there's more room in a 64 Imp to do less of a severe modification. Regardless, it's worked perfectly for me for years. Since that rod has some length adjustment built into it, I've also heard of people simply moving the control servo more forward on the inner fender to accommodate the dual res master. Regardless, the mods I've made have worked perfectly for nearly 20 years...

Lastly, I made a heat shield to protect the brake lines from the heat of the exhaust manifolds, since they now run significantly closer to the manifold. No problems either.

THANKS MUCH for posting this - I think the application for this would be the same on a '67 Chrysler? Mine has cruise control, and I'm thinking of doing the same (single to dual) upgrade, hadn't thought of the cruise getting in the way, but it will...…..

Your car should have a dual res master on it already. If not, I'm surprised, as I thought dual res was mandated for Jan 1 67. Perhaps your car is an early build.

If it truly is a single pot master, then it's possible that there's enough room for a dual res to be installed, since it's likely that the manufacturer was aware of the upcoming mandate, and made allowances in their engine bay layout.

I'd like to see a picture of your engine bay, as I expect you won't have an issue. Here's a pic of a 67 Fury with Autopilot, which shows clearly that the dual res master with discs is able to fit, as the servo has been moved forward on the inner fender considerably from where it is positioned in cars 66 and earlier. I expect the control rod from the gas pedal pivot is also different therefore. I also see that the main mounting bracket is different, to fit the curve of the inner fender.

Well that’s a lot of good information I will use on my 67 Monaco but I sure wished I had that cruise control system. The ole lady I bought my car from was the original owner and although it had air n powered buckets n windows she didn’t order it with disc brakes , tilt steering or cruise!? So sad as I can’t seem to find a used set of any of this anywheres over the years and am slowly getting ready for a total restoration. That Imperial is a beauty and sure hope to see it’s transformation here on C body forum... you guys are all so knowledgeable and I love the smarts and humor

THey don’t even mention a single res master in the ‘67 Imperial/Chrysler service manual.

That's what I believed, but then I thought I could have missed a changeover from single to dual that happened on Jan 1 of 67, kind of like headrests were mandated for Jan 68... I think... lol...

Auto Pilot on ANY C body is rare. Less rare on a Chrysler, super rare on a Dodge or Plymouth. Dash dials are specific to each model line, so while the underhood components will swap, it's hard to do so with the dash dials.

Case in point - over the past 35 years that I've been paying attention, I think I've seen a total of six 65-66 Fury/VIP cars with Auto Pilot, same for Dodges. However, in the various Chryslers models (Newport, New Yorker, 300) I've seen quite a few with it.

Imperials were more likely to have Auto Pilot, but the dash controls were different again, as were the underhood cables and control rods.

hmmmm here are the only two engine bay photos I have, sorry if not too clear. The master DOES have two lines that come out, but has a different cover than on the Imperial, so I assumed it was NOT dual reservoir. It may be different because it has drum and not discs? I thought that to have dual reservoir, there would be a top/cover like yours above, with the two pot/domes, and clamp. The cover on my New Yorker's master looks sealed. Would be nice to be wrong here, if it is dual, then I don't need to worry...………………..feel free to correct me by ALL means...….

Absolutely a dual reservoir, you’re good.:steering:

I figured I’d get busy on this one too, or at least get it to run again. I saw that the radiator is a leaker so I pulled it and took it up to my favorite radiator shop.

In the process of pulling the radiator out of the coupe I happened to compare the part number with the one in the convertible and it turns out the one in the convertible is actually out of a 65 so I think I will put the one that I just got done into the convertible and put the ‘65 rad in the coupe.

How do they differ?
Just the part number, although this coupe which is an ac car has a shroud where my vert which is non ac didn’t but it also has a ‘65 rad in it so the shroud maybe just didn’t make it back on.

Judging from the trailer hitch, did you have that installed in Denmark? That is a type not found or installed in North America, but they are everywhere in Europe.

Your car looks nice with the '70s Chrysler wire wheel covers! Looks like they belong there.

As for the dual master cylinder, they were mandated at the beginning of the 1967 MODEL year, not the 1967 calendar year. So, all new MY1967 and newer vehicles will have the dual-pot master cylinder, per the US DOT FVMSS standards.

I have a extra shroud off a 65 if you need one?
