Is this an original starter?

I'm wondering if someone can tell me this is a remanned starter or if it is original. 1971 Chrysler Newport Custom 383
Does the torn round gasket that is in two pieces in the metal catch pan matter for reinstalling this starter?

A 37***** part number would be much more aligned with a 73 or 74 application.
 
That is what I was wondering. So most likely pulled from a 73 and installed on this 71. Thanks a ton!

Actually, most likely a rebuilt starter bought over the counter and the core (the original starter) turned in. Gotta remember that nobody cared about that stuff as long as the car started when the new one was put in.

Even the dealers installed rebuilt starters and some shops rebuilt starters "in house" back then. Some parts warehouses did them too. My uncle (partners in a warehouse) had the contract to rebuild Mopar alternators and starters for the NYS Trooper Mopars in the sixties and seventies.

The standard procedure was to grab a rebuilt piece off the shelf and get the customer happy and down the road rather than rebuilding the OE starter.

Not an original. It will go back in and serve it's purpose until it does not work any longer.

After you gave me information, I figured out that it is indeed a reman. Dated 79. Pictures later.

Sure do appreciate the local experts help! You guys rock!!
 
What tipped me off was the length of the barrel. It was too short for an original B/RB block starter. The parts shops sell the later dated starter remans because they're CHEAPER to rebuild.

Ah that's not really a gasket, it looks like the friction washer, and I would say that yes it is important.
There are also 2 fiber washers plus steel washers on the armature which on many rebuilds are missing.
 
With just a quick Lookee Loo of the 'net this is what I would say is a brand new OEM starter, at least what I remember long ago. (or a very damn good reman)

I thought those bolts were awful long compared to the usual starter.
It is reinstalled. Hope the "friction" washer isn't that big a deal for the moment.
Starts great now.
The battery cable was ridiculous and had several issues. I can't believe I just passed by that mess of junk instead of changing the cable first. Much appreciated guidance! thanks yal !!
Had to do a generic wire from Oreilly's. Had to cut the rubber holder at the starter end to divide the two wires.
After getting the starter installed it fired up just fine. Took it to O'reilly's to have their machine check the charging system and the voltage regulator was bad. Purchased one and went to drive it home. But as I let it sit outside running it got hot enough that it vapor locked the rubber gas line and I had to do some pushing of the car out of a walmart intersection. That's always fun. Bunch of guys came and helped me push that boat. Got lots of compliments and conversations out of the extra pushers.
Gave it a little while to cool down, came back and he started back up like a top. Ole Jabberjaw needs a fan shroud.
Carb to be rebuilt next week.
