I just bought a 65 sport fury convertible project car. Was told the 383 was original to the car. The engine is red with a 4 barrel carb. I thought all 383’s were turquoise. Car has commando badges on fenders and body paint is original. So why the red paint?

Wondering if someone had it out and painted it. Are you sure it’s a 383? Is the distributor in the front of the motor?

When the engine is original red it,s an Canadian car.........

So are the Canadian 383 red the same color/tone as the 318 red? And did the Canadian 383’s ever switch to Turquoise?
Just looking for interesting trivia facts.

@LocuMob is your Canadian 4 spd a 383? 66 correct? What color is the engine?

There is a 350 with a casting date of 1959 residing between the fenders, instead of the 383 it came with.

Update, just a speck of red under the orange paint someone globbed on.

Most 1969 - 71 383 4-bbl engines equipped with air conditioning and Carter 4-bbl were found painted turquoise.
2: Most 1970 - 71 high-performance models painted street hemi orange.

Nope. It's not and either/or proposition. The answer is one or the other and it changes year to year.

My understanding was that HP 383 and 440 orange is a different shade from hemi orange.

I scraped off some of the paint with a screw driver on different parts of the engine and it is bare metal under the red paint

1966 last year for Canadian 383 to be painted red.
Typically everything got painted after assembly--power steering pump, transmission, etc.
I handled 2 Canuck 66 Chryslers built at the Windsor Ontario plant and that is what I observed.
Hope this helps.

Turquoise started in 67 like the rest.
Yes Chrysler used the same red on the 318 poly and LA in Canada up to 1969.

There are actually two Hemi Oranges. “Street Hemi Orange” went on street hemis and HP 383s and 440s (‘69 and up). “Race Hemi Orange” went only on non-street-legal, race hemis.
