Never a good feeling when you're going down the highway at 60mph and you feel the car take a big sidestep. Always have a bunch of tools in the trunk but didn't help this time... Front drivers side wheel bearing disintegrated and that's not a spare I carry...

Dutch triple A towed it to my buddy's shop and they got me a loan car so could be worse I guess.

Dam, when's the last time those bearing were serviced, when it rolled out of the factory? Better do the boat of them!

Interesting story....my friend just helped me with the front brakes on my '78 New Yorker. I purchased the car about 12 years ago with 45k miles and the front brakes pulsated. So we were going to do front pads and rotors. We did the passenger side first without a problem. On the driver's side, the inner wheel bearing came apart in pieces. Was your failed bearing an inside one?

looking at those pics i would say you have it backwards. your heading should say the first time i let her down [ as in lack of maintenance ]. glad it all worked out.

Could be, could be.. in the couple years I've got the car they haven't been done at least.

Yeah I know now those should be checked more often. Maybe I had it backwards, wouldn't have been the first time though

Mine was the outer bearing

When you buy an old car you must service the bearings before downing very much freeway driving.
They old bearings last many decades if they have good grease in them.

Well, on our second trip to Carlisle we returned home via a rollback. All 206 miles. Due to loose wires at the amp gauge.
Cant really anticipate everything... new cars get towed too.

FWIW, I seem to travel with too many tools, hoping to be prepared, or nothing.... nothing+AAA+credit card solves as many problems.

I'd say I also carry too many tools. But hey, what else am I gonna use that massive trunk for?

Not that I know off unfortunately, but I would very much like to go to one.
