Vintage air system for 68 Fury III

Thanks, funny I bought my custom hose from coldhose too... I just couldnt find the stuff to go from a #12 to a #8.
That is a pretty big stepup / stepdown, why would you need to do that? #6 and #8 are usually high side and #10 and #12 are usually low side sizes. I used a #10 to #12 stepup fitting from Coldhose.

Ok I had my hoses confused. 12 to 10 to the compressor and then #8 compressor to top of the condenser. Im thinking about getting the shorty compressor...SD7H13 I believe to save some space and weight.

Brainfart you know lol.

Let me ask, how did you wire your AC up?

Go back to post #6 and look at my thread. You will need to add a thermostatic cutoff switch and a pressure cutoff switch (usually on the dryer) and wire those, I made a new harness for this. The compressor power you need to connect to the dash controls, is the factory harness still there?

That looks almost exactly like my setup. I have the switch in the dryer too. Did not dive i to the harness yet... so i dont really know if it is still there. I have something else to consider (EFI triggers my electric fan with a ground signal) but I think I fou d a workaround to override that!

Good news, my AC switch still works. I just did a wiring harnedss with some relays that override my ECU fan control! Works like a charm! All I need to do is to plug in the compressor and it will turn on too. I scored one on fleabay for cheap :)

Im gonna look into making my own mountingbracket for it, this way I can play arou d with the positioning a little bit.

On the topuc of flushing the evaporator, Is it worth it buying a can of this flushing sruff from autozone?

I bought a flush gun and FJC solvent at Amazon, there are probably many choices. You need some type of solvent that will clean out the dirt and old oil and you need to use modest air pressure to force it through the lines and coils then dry everything out before charging.

Hmm I saw those on Amazon too. Seems a lot for just one use... plus I dont have an actual air compressor unfortunately.

This is what I was thinking about using!?

Might work, question would be whether the propellant in a can will provide enough pressure to completely clean the core. Also, since you will not be able to run air through it to dry it out, will this stuff evaporate completely? Others should chime in here if you have used this.

The biggest concern is that your evaporator has been left open to the elements for a long time, you could have just about anything in there including bugs or small varmints...

You are absolutely right. I need to flush all the tarantulas out lol. I can probably rig something up to connect my tire inflator to it!? Man, I just heared from Buchillion that I need the $250 compressor bracket for my smallblock...are there any cheaper alternatives than them?

My 383 bracket was $119 2 years ago and their quality is excellent. Cheaper is not always the best idea...

I bit the bullet and ordered the bracket...only after my failed fabrication attempt haha. I already measured and ordered the hoses too. Now I can figure out how to flush that evap core.

I just blew a can of brake cleaner through the evaporator. It seems like there is no leak but ohhhboy... the liquid coming out looked like piss and smelled awful too. I think I need a whole lot more than one can... gonna let it sit for a bit and then use some air. Aerosol cans actually work pretty good once I rigged up some hoses to make the input side seal tight. Might actually use some alcohol...

So odd thing. The #12 fitting does not go in all the way... shall I find a thicker o ring or shorten the hose end just enough so it seats? Or am I wrong completely and just need to crank it down really hard.

Making progress. I had to deviate from the install manual a little but it came together nice. I dont have it completely tightened up yet and I also need to find a longer belt...

DO NOT crank it down, that should fit with no problem. You may have to grind the hose end a bit.

Alright it fits now. After two runs to the store to find the right belt lenght(first one was too short, second too long) I ordered one online. Now all I need to do it put the belt on and fill the system. I did a leaktest and it seems to hold, so thats good!

The first thing you need to do when all is connected is pull a vacuum on the system, you can probably rent or borrow a vacuum pump from a parts store. Also - important - was your receiver drier left open to the elements at all? If so it is ruined, you will need to get a new one and attach that as the last step before pulling vacuum. You will also need a gauge set for reading vacuum and charging the system.
