Does anybody know if it's possible to use a modern wire shifted gearbox with push buttons?
I wouldn't mind getting rid of the shifter:

Not likely. The "cable shift" transmissions used from 56 through 65 would not easily adapt to a wire shift.
Not saying it can't be done, but you would need an adapter from your wire shift and a custom fabricated shift cable..... and a lot of engineering.
good luck.

So how about this then...
I reckon the push button system has only one wire/cable, right? & the buttons make it move & stop at different distances..? So that would mean you'd only have to figure out wich button makes the cable stop at wich place outside the modern trans & then maby replace them or mark them different..?

OR, you could do what Edsel and Packard before them did. Use pushbuttoms to operate an electric actuator mechanism on the trans itself. Edsel put the buttons in the middle of the steering wheel (Tele-Touch Drive) whereas Packard had an extra box with the buttons on it.

Might be simpler to engineer a stepper-motor actuator with pushbuttons or even pushbuttons which work a Bluetooth connection to the stepper-motor/actuator.

Enjoy!

Since I already have the stuff on the dash I'll use it, just gonna figure out how & how to fabricate an extra button for park. & while I'm waiting to start the project I'm hoping someone who's done it before will tell me how...

Might need to verify that the trans has the internals to support a "PARK" function.

Just a thought,

Now I've got another thing to sort out first; The dash stuff I have is for the early -56 models = 2 speed... So I'll have to get a set for torqflite first. :(

(How's "more buttons" going to fit in the existing location on the instrument panel?)

Concern that the TF plate will fit exactly where the PF plate went.

Just curious,

Aha, so the 3-speed "box" with buttons & mechanism might be bigger & would need different surounding / curved dash plate?
