My steering box is way gone, tightend it stone hard but still has a play way to biiig... So I wonder if a box from a -59 Windsor would fit my -56 New Yorker?

I did a little research. I found some matching part numbers that indicate 57-59 are the same "chuck" (as Chrysler calls it), however the part numbers for 55-56 are different. You would need to physically compare the boxes. You could likely get the box from the 56 rebuilt.

Considering how different the '55-'56 cars were from the '57-'59 cars, I highly suspect that the two steering boxes would not be "a bolt-in" deal. I also suspect that even if you changed the complete steering systems, that it would not work without a lot of fabrication. Might even need to change the steering columns too. Too many differences.

Rebuilding by a quality rebuilder might be the only option as any other used chuck you might find could be worse than what you have.

Check in the resources on the two Chrysler 300 Letter Car club website might be an option worth investigating. There's a link to one in the recent "300E Parts" thread. Might even be some links at www.jholst.net (plus parts book downloads).

Just some thoughts,

How do the part numbers for the internal parts compare? The cases might not swap but maybe the guts will.

Great web site!
Looks like:
55-56
57-early58
late 58 to 64 (except 300)

Ah... Well the -59 car is on a scrap yard so to compare the inside will be quite impossible & to buy it & then find out it won't fit aint what I want. & ofcourse -57 was the first year for torsion suspension, but if I'm lucky & go there with mine to compare with I might(!) see that I only would have to make a bracket... Maby...

Just not going to work out. And making steering brackets could get scary.

On 55-56 the arm comes out on the side so it moves front-to-back while on 57-59 the arm comes out on the underside moving sideways... :(

I build 1955- 1956 Mopar Power steering conversion kits for Dodge and Plymouth that might work for you. If you would like to discuss this issue, give me a call or Email.

The thing is that I'm living in Sweden & the shipping is a bit much compared to from some of the MoPar people here. But thanx anyway Floyd!
