It is starting, the goal of killing off anything gasoline powered. Start small, and where does it end?

This will affect us all, how soon is debatable. I hope this gets defeated, but I'm not expecting it to. Once the ball is rolling, it won't stop. Electric vehicles may be the future, but here's another push to help it along.

I guess if you, like I am, are sitting on projects you'd like to drive, better get going, time may be running out.
 
Common sense has to kick in at some point. The article specifically mentions the use of gensets for when the unreliable CA power grid goes down, especially for residents of the central valley. Not sure how many of you have ever driven through the Imperial Valley during summer. It sure as hell isn't beautiful ocean breezes. How does one power their home when the grid goes down? I get that roof mounted solar power can handle it but not without the ridiculous cost that no everyone can afford. Not to mention the issues that come along with lithium batteries. Let's just say there's no way in hell I would put those on my house!

CA has always been pushing for sometimes radical ways to offset the problems of their air quality. The environmental and humanitarian impact of these "green" initiatives are more of a muddy brown when you look into how the raw materials are sourced. It doesn't come from our backyard though, so who cares, right?

There's always going to be talk of killing our hobby. I really hope I never see it in my lifetime but I'm sure it's coming one day.
 
Then there is the lack of interest in old cars from the next generation. Next time you go to a swap meet or car show look around! The crowd isn’t getting any younger!
JMO,Today’s teenager isn’t even interested in getting a license let alone a vintage car.
They are interested in technology and marijuana. If I had a super low miles museum piece car, I think I would put as many miles on it as I can beetween now then. Hate to be the glass half empty,but I see vintage cars as a bad investment in the future. The value will be enjoying them while you still can.

Not to mention the fact that the current generation has a low 20% efficiency rating when new. Add to that a 20 year life span with decreasing efficiency each year. They're going to do everything they can to force people to buy into this **** and the trash pile that results from this will be a mess to clean up 30 years from now.

That may be true in CA but not here on the East coast. Sure most of the 60's muscle cars are owned by old guys who grew up with them, but that has a lot to do with price. The younger crowd has taken to the trucks and Jeeps that we grew up with, which up until recently where much more affordable.

Younger Folks do love their weed. From what I notice, they still have a passion for cars but Notjing older then a Fox body. Mostly tuners and trucks. I wonder what will happen with our Mopars once most of the older generations have passed on. I am 27, I love Mopars with a deep passion but I realize there are few my age that share those feelings. Best to just enjoy them as much as we can, while we can.

Dang, thanks for the link. One to watch and if it starts in California it might travel east, often just a matter of time.

I'm not worried about our cars or cars over a certain age being "banned". We are small beans in the emissions big picture. If anything I would expect some sort of grandfather clause to allow cars over a certain age to be registered with mileage limits - to prevent them from being used as daily drivers. Perhaps higher registration costs. They are after the average person with 10 poorly tuned engines on the garage wall. If u give me an alternative power method that does the same job I'm open to the idea. But that's the issue. Most people- me too- don't change unless you make it inconvenient to stick with the old way and/or provide a better alternative. I'm fine with Cali being the test mule where they introduce the inconvenience which creates the $market which pushes businesses to create good alternatives. If I can buy an electric generator that will start more reliably then a carb/gas one in an emergency I'm listening. Thank you Cali for putting them on the shelf.

For our cars it could be the opposite. If you want to stick with the old ways you have to buy a classic car. Or 4 to remain under a mileage limit. Kinda reminds me of the stories the EU guys tell of the various restrictions and rules they have to follow to own a classic. Definitely inconvenient and expensive. But that doesn't stop them and it wont stop us from continuing the hobby. I guess I'm a half full (maybe fool) on this one.

Something that the "old guys" over look is the fact that those are "old" cars to us now (you and I are close in age). Hell, they make restoration parts for Fox-body Mustangs, 3rd gen Camaros and square-body trucks. I even have a late 90's Honda insured with Hagerty. :D

So a car from the 50s-70s' to a millennial is like a Ford T to a boomer. :poke:
 
I voted to recall Newsome. I fear all I’ve done is put my name on a list.! I didn’t have to show ID to vote? ANYBODY could have voted in this recall election. Newsome will pass this bill I’m sure.
This morning I having this dead 100 + ft pine tree removed by PGE becuase it’s leaning towards power lines and will fall and may cause a wildfire. What would they use to take this hazardous tree down without chain saws?

Cordless saws are handy but they won't come close to tackling that job.

I'm a young'n, and i've been trying my best to drag friends into the hobby. I invite a bunch over when I do repairs, and try to teach them stuff. I got one to stick around for almost all of an engine rebuild. Not only do half of my millennial friends not have licenses, but the ones that do can't even put on a spare tire. However, with my pushing a few have been getting some sense.

Agree with the solar comments and the battery comments... still haven't had to decide if I'll board a 787, but have found myself pleased to be on an Airbus anything since Boeing started that crap so half baked. No good reason I can think of to avoid lead acid batteries for home solar use... just locate them and fire pit separately... if Li-ion is more cost efficient... do the same thing, locate wisely in a non combustible enclosure.

I've learned to live with the fact that my laptop, cell phone and so many other devices have Li-ion batteries... all I can really do is hope for the best if something silly goes wrong.

California has long disregarded 48 state requirements and has pretty much mandated much of this market away already... only the select, expensive, cleaner small engines have been available for over a decade... read the cheap generator/lawn mower/whatever advertisement fine print and what the rest of us buy is unlikely to be available to CA residents unless they smuggle it in from another state. The lawn guy is really going to hate having to buy/charge a flock of batteries and IDK where he'll buy an electric zero turn industrial mower... but I'm sure someone builds it or is preparing to build it.

For us and those who have stuff that works on gasoline... there should be no worry about mandatory replacement... but repairs will become more difficult as the market shrinks and parts become less available. Commercial vehicles will likely be mandated away... but probably not too quickly outside the CA border.

I do expect a train wreak to occur when the big push comes... hopefully before too much dependence happens... but until then, enjoy your car... when the power grid proves incapable of supporting everyone plugging in, be thankful you own something with an ICE

In a recent discussion with a member who is very informed and very pro-correction of climate change... I pointed out that the only real solution is a huge population reduction... covid isn't doing the job... I've done my part by NOT reproducing and should be able to enjoy my ICE collection for the rest of my lifetime... don't know about the fuel costs, but I expect availability to last a long while. If you're expecting to outlive me or have children who will, you have stuff to think about.

I was having a phone conversation with another member last week about this exact situation in Kommiefornia. CARB is sending him notices about his skid steer that will need to be replaced due to age.

It's funny in that I just viewed a Tube video about some Phd Doctor going over the LuLaRoe MLM Cult quasi legal pyramid scheme where I think he said the wife that started the <ahem> business came from a family of 11 children... sheech, I, born in the 50's there was a idea of reducing or controlling the worlds population, and it was taught in the later grades in the primary school I attended as a child after the horror's of all the dead of WWII where it was recommended that future families should be limited to only 2 children to put the brakes on population growth.
I see all that's out the window now.

Absolutely. The answer to that question is always yes. If there is a replacement power source for a generator then bring it on. A sure way to get people's interest is to say it cant be done. Everything we have was likely preceded with "its not possible". They do sell battery power zero turns now. The options are coming. Not for me right now but I'm watching and reading. Certainly there is reason for concern in the small engine production and repair business but I don't believe it translates to canceling registrations for >50yr old cars. Agree the current power grid wont last as is. The bottle neck will get pushed to different place and then we will have to fix that and it will take some time and pain before >50yr wires get an upgrade. My kids will be driving both my fury on weekends and a modern truck that powers the house in a storm. And its my job to show them both options.
