One more pic

Thanks Jerry, I‘m not sure the tag would come off whole, that’s why I took the hi-res pic. The best thing we could all do with these cars it document everything, no matter how insignificant.

Jerry,

Interesting that your tag doesn't have the A12 code that most Hursts do, as you and I discussed last November. Did you ever find your broadcast sheet?

Here's my tag.

The A12 designation on Hursts kicks in about VIN 200000 meaning anything lower (his tag) won't have it coded. Anything above (your tag) will.
With the addition of the A12 code, the Y39 designation shifts one spece to the left.

A combination of things:

Color/interior combo.
Engine code
125 SPD
Y39
J99 VON
I assume EW1 could be had on a standard Chrysler?
What about M6T5?
E86/U also available on a standard Chrysler?
No other cars built that day? Were all Hurst built that day?
Again you could special order a standard Chrysler
J99 VON unique to the 1970 300-Hurst?

Whereas unlikely, it is possible for these options to show up on a standard Chrysler, the A12 was one that is unique to the Hurst cars.

If I find a loose tag in my collection how do I definitively know it is to a Hurst car?

J99 VON

M6T5

V78

Y39

A12

125 SPD

It’s possible in the universe that some one could have ordered a 300, U code, WW1, with V78 (stripe deleted), but not the Imperial seats, nor the Hurst specific road wheels, and this car would have to have a sequence # from roughly 195000-199999, to not have the A12; which would allow it to enter your possible universe theory.

1970 300-H were built from December 1969 thru July 1970.

The 125 SPD is an internal accounting designation; to track the cars..and had nothing to do with the SPD, which was SOP with special build or package cars from Chrysler.

No other cars built that day? Were all Hurst built that day? Common SPDs can be found on some package cars. This happens to be one example of all of the cars with this package having a common SPD.
Again you could special order a standard Chrysler YES
J99 VON unique to the 1970 300-Hurst? NO. VONs can be used on different makes and models. J99 VONs are also found on Plymouth Superbirds with 999 paint.

Whereas unlikely, it is possible for these options to show up on a standard Chrysler, the A12 was one that is unique to the Hurst cars. For the 1970 model year; yes.

If I find a loose tag in my collection how do I definitively know it is to a Hurst car? Post a pic of the tag so we can help ;)

VIN below 200000 = the J99 VON will be the biggest clue then the other codes.
VIN above 200000 = Look for the A12 code.

This was a rhetorical/hypothetical question, I have long loved these cars but have never researched them.

So finding a J99 VON on a standard Chrysler is highly unlikely, borderline impossible.

So the absence of the A12 might raise the flag, but the combination of other codes should be enough.

Alan

Can any one show me a 1970 Chrysler that has J99 VON, that isn’t a Hurst? Not possible

I’ve yet to see a 1970 300 optioned like a Hurst, and never will, because simply you could not order the Imperial interior on a 300, Nor the 300-H road wheels. Not possible.

This was a rhetorical/hypothetical question, I have long loved these cars but have never researched them. Me too. I know very little about the actual cars but I do know tags and codes.

So finding a J99 VON on a standard Chrysler is highly unlikely, borderline impossible. Due to the way VONs were assigned, you could not find a J99 on a non Hurst Chrysler. That VON series for a Chrysler is reserved for the A12 Hurst cars.

So the absence of the A12 might raise the flag, but the combination of other codes should be enough. You won't find the A12 coded on the tag prior to ~ VIN 200000 so yes, the combination has to be enough to show it's a Hurst.

Hi Trace ,
I didn't find a broadcast sheet for the car , unfortunately .
May I ask what a J99 VON is ?
I see it on the tag .
The sticker on the door says it was built in March of 70 .
I have no reason to doubt it's authenticity and did talk with the former longtime owner's son when I bought it at auction . I got parts from Murray Park for it and he knows the car .
I also had a couple of other members here at the house looking at it last year and can vouch for the car .
Thanks again everyone ,
Jerry .

Thought I'd throw in a couple more pictures just to further my case .
Car is definitely not a clone and will take a lot of effort and expense to get it close to it's former glory .
It will never be to the level of Trace 300's car , but I will do my best .
One unseen part is the hand cable for the trunk release .
Anyone know where I can get a 16 ' long cable made to replace the original ?
Also have the original spare tire that was in the trunk .

I thought the trunk release for these cars was vacuum actuated from a button in the glovebox. Does yours actually have a cable?

Yes , there is a vacuum release in the glove box .
There is also a hand cable that is attached to the dash next to the e brake release that runs along the driver's side as a secondary .

Didn't upload . Spare tire .

I don't know the Hurst that well, but I do recognize this wheel - sort of.
It doesn't have any slots around the perimeter of the center disc, which IIRC signifies it as a HD wheel used on station wagons.
Is that correct? And was it used on the Hurst also?
Was there an option for a Hurst Road Wheel for a spare, or did all Hursts get this wheel for a spare?
