I'm trying to find what axle is on my car to order seals. I seem to be out of luck matching the casting numbers I found to anything standard. Anyone who has seen an axle with this look/numbers? 440 with 727 but was originally a 383 so it might have an axle for that motor still. I found "246" "199" and a single number 2 on the casing so far.

You have found "stamp numbers". "Casting numbers" are raised format. Might need to clean off some of that accumulated road dirt. In 1968, only ONE rear axle in Chryslers (unless it might be a 440TNT with a factory 4-speed, possibly) and that is the 8 3/4" rear axle. Some of the Plymouth and Dodge 318s might have had a smaller diameter ring gear axle, as I recall.

I would think that the Chryslers would have the 742 (1&3/4" pinion) casting. They also made the 741 (1&3/8" pinion) but I'm not sure they were used in Chrysler models.

I'm not sure what carrier that is? When I looked at the pics I said to myself...What is up with all that extra ribbing and fanges!

Sure doesn't have the standard look of a 741/742 case, and definitely not a 489 case. Best I can suggest is to get some solvent and couple good brushes, a bunch of rags and cardboard for the ground and clean all the crud off of it....maybe you will find more helpful castings or numbers elsewhere on the carrier.

Yes it is a different center housing for sure.

Yes, I'll powerwash it during the weekend and see if something else showes up.. The numbers are however, cast numbers and not stamped. There's also a lone "2" cast lower down on the casing.

As mentioned, the casting numbers you'll need are raised, not recessed.

Be careful with the aim of the washer nozzle! There is a VENT to the axle housing which might be a bad source for moisture intrusion.
