Here is a picture of my Fender Tag. Can someone decode it please. I also have a question. I want to repaint it. Should it be the same color as the car or were they black from the factory?
Thank you....:)

Body color. An one screw is natural, the corner with the painted screw typically shows signs of the tag being bent up so they could paint under it. Once painted they'd put the other screw in.

Alan

I can decode it this evening if someone else doesn't do it first.

Thank you Alan and looking forward to it. I know the car was a frame off resto before I purchased the car, but I don't understand why they didn't paint the fender tag body color and why it's black. I don't see any signs of it ever being painted red!??

People often put their tags in a "safe" place when the car goes into a shop and with this it doesn't get painted.

I have never seen a tag that wasn't originaly painted body color (doesn't mean it didn't happen).

I was curios,so I just tried to decode my fender tag and it came up as a 67 NYer 4 door, but the car is a two door hardtop. All other options match up.Is it possible the factory just screwed up?

Alan, can you fill in the question marks left unanswered in mdh157 post above?
Thank you....

Thank you very much. So this was a special order car and by the date built is was an early 66 built in 1965?
I wonder if there's a way to find out what the production number was?

The VIN sequence will tell you this. It's an early build, but not sure early. I believe the new model year production would have started in August, '65.

Not that I am a expert on tags and build sheets the fact that it is a sold car I have been told just means that it had a specific dealer to go to, meaning if the dealer really knew or thought he knew his customers he could order all red cars same code no retail customer yet and the S.O. number is the number on the form that the salesman/manager grabbed next ie. Bob puts 25 of these forms in his desk Joe goes and gets one if he needs it, like Mark said irrelevant just attaches the two. This is what I have been told decoding my Challenger and I have no build sheet cause L.A. built car.

How the tags were handled varies by year and plant. What happened in '65 may not have happened in '66. Some plants typically have the bend (STL), some don't (Hamtramck). Some plants painted the car with the tag on, and some painted the car with the tag off (69 LR tags are notorious for not being painted body color). Some plants used screws and some used rivets (Belvedere for a certain period).

One of the reasons I started hanging out here is to learn about the C body tags.

66SportFury...at what plant was your car built?

Have you ever checked the number on the tag against the numbers on the body to see if they match? That will help answer the question.

The Sales Order (SO) numbers are most certainly relevant. They are unique to that car and sometimes can tell us something about the car.
"Special order" is not the same thing as 'ordered'. Your SO number is typical for that line of car for that year meaning is was simply an 'ordered' car. Someone went into the dealership, sat down, checked the boxes on the order sheet and got the car with the options they wanted. There does not appear to be any thing 'special' order (different paint, dealer demo, show car, etc) for this particular car.

Production of the '66 model year would have started in August of '65 and run through July of '66, so this car was built about mid year.

f/6= does the car have a rear seat speaker?
h/7 = does the car have fender mounted turn signals?
H/1= does the car have power brakes?

A friend of mine with a 71 super bee lynch road car did not have fender tags when he bought it. Went to take out inst. panel to disassemble and clean and there where the fender tags hanging with a wire clip hanging from dash frame. Other plants screwed tag down with one screw and tag was bent upwards to allow paint under then screwed down with a unpainted screw on other side this is the way my challenger is/was.

I was lead to believe the so is the number on the form it could order any car line

h-7 = Fender Mounted Turn Signals
H-1 = Power Brakes

As for f-6 here is the list, being in the f (I believe are typically fleet items, like Police)

This is the list of options that it might be (ending in 6 within the likely range)...
456 Power Steering
496 Fast idle control
516 Trunk Lamp
536 Remote Outside Mirror
556 Front Seat Belts
586 Simulated Mag Wheelcovers
626 70 Amp Battery

Most of my notes cover A-Body or 67-69
