Can anyone give me a way to remove fuel tank strap bolts that are stripped without having to use a torch? Both front and back ones spin but won't loosen, several days of spraying liq wrench hasn't solved the problem.

l would cut straps and remove tank to have clearance to deal with them...if your not getting new straps not shure what youd do

I thought abt getting new straps, do not want to have to wait for something i order then hope it fits correctly. My patience is waning again, another friggin project that should be simple but might end up getting nixed.

only other thing l can think of would be to weld tack bolt and try to snap it off remove tank grind weld, remove bolt and replace

cant say lve been up there chasein them bolts yet so no idea if you can get a small air grinder up there...may have to order new straps or make own

Take a pair of bolt cutters and cut the threaded rod above the nut and strap. You can make your own strap hold downs out of threaded rod. You could use a cut off wheel also, but wouldn't trust that due to sparks.

66: It appears to be too tight to get cutters in on the front bolts, the rear I can get them on the bolt head. Don't ask me how the hell they expect the rear bolts to be secured, cannot get a nut in there on top to thread the new bolts into, might be better off just trying to drop the front bolts since it has to be tilted down in the front anyway to get the neck free so it can be lowered to the floor.

if you have access to a welder I have cut the straps, removed the tank, removed offending bolts and repaired the straps. the bolts will be easier to remove with the tank out

Wait - a-hold-it.... There should be two "J" bolts on the front side of the straps and the back end of the strap should have a "T" to slide in a channel.

I was thinking the same thing.

I was not saying anything as not to sound stupid or maybe there was a change in the 70's or he was working on some totally different car.

I do know that the nuts require a wrench all the way off as they have a locking mechanisms.

Get a cutoff wheel and cut the bolts if needed.

Bingo.........I am working on the GP, Polara tank is just fine, as a matter-of-fact I had her out today. sending unit or attached wire is bad on the Poncho, only way to fix either is by dropping the tank.

Well Gee Mark....... Its a good thing Alan piped up or this thread could have gone 11 pages without any of us knowing
