Hey all, just picked up a 67 sport fury 383, 2 bbl, 516 heads, 742 rear end, no idea on the ratio. Got it cheap from a buddy hurting for cash. The car is solid, 45k miles. By the looks under the valve cover Id be inclined to believe it's just 45k and not 145k. Lots of parts replaced mostly brakes and chassis bearings and shocks, but starter and new exhaust from headers back. Wheels tires wheel cyl lines and hoses. About 5k I figure from the receipts. Engine purrs, real quiet no noise from the valves and rockers. I was a ford tech for 15 yrs starting I the mid 90's. So needless to say my experience was with cars was all distributor less, throttle bodies and injectors. That being said.... I looking to build a street rod... Red light to red light kinda car. Looking to make it mean. I'm looking for opinions from some of you seasoned veterans. My buddy has some 906 heads are they better than the 516. I know it will breathe better with the bigger exhaust valve but I thought the 516 is a closed head. I'm looking for somewhere to research how to build the proper combo. Carb, cam, converter and rear end. Sure grip I'd assume, find a 489, what ratio? Ya know? Just looking for opinions and where to research how to plan this out. Until recently a classic 383 mopar seemed beyond my reach, so you can imagine my excitement! I realize it will never be a high dollar b body and a perfect restoration isn't my intent... Looking to build a nasty rat rod. I welcome your opinions and input.

Thanks guys

If you stay with the 383, it will never be nasty.
You want nasty?
For your car to be the nastiest of the nasty, you need to drop in a stroked 440 with a couple of carbs on top of it. Stay with the 383, and stock Suburus will kick your *** no matter how many $ bills you spent on your 383. It will be cheaper to buy the Sube.

Cool, thx commando... Point taken, nasty suggests a lot. It will never be a 440. Building a 440 isn't in the cards anytime soon. Would a few bucks wake that 383 up, Just for stomping around town or just not worth it?

The 383 is no slouch and yes it can be made to be livelier with a few cheap hop ups, but please don't make the mistake of thinking everything bigger will be better, the 906 heads you talk of are good but will need hardened valve seats put in if you intend a lot of miles. Also as Commando said, it will never be nasty, expect just over 300 horsepower with a little work, factory gross is 290 with a two BBL i believe. Go with headers, a mild torquey cam and 4BBl carb say a 625 cfm carter on a weiand dual plane manifold, those manifolds are good and you will be surprised by the chirping tyres. Oh and put a shift kit in the 727 mainly for reliability. if it has 3.23 gears in it that should be fine but don't go below 3.55's if you do decide to change them.

Welcome to the site from the Motor City!
These 383s have a little more potential than 300 horse guys. The HP rating for the 4 bbl versions was 330 with a.c. And 335 without. With some creative head work and port matching I bet 350 horse is easily attainable. That's no 440 but its no slouch either.

you give them way to much love. I always like to admire the halo effect head lights in my rear view mirror....which all "subes" apparently have these days.

don't know what your circumstances were in your "vette"....(I've never been and admirer of those, too much hype)...but perhaps you got a lemon?? Naaaw...Chevrolet, that would be absolutely unthinkable.

Welcome to the party Sickboy, Iz the white crap still comin' off the lake over there? It iz only the middle of May yeah know! I've got a car-bud over there in Angola that I haven't heard from since Christmas that might still be buried in that stuff that whimpez a lot 'bout the weather and I keep tellin' him he ain't ever gonna get Palm treez or cactus tah grow in hiz back yard and he just keepz tryin'. BTW, I'm very sorry to be the one to break the newz to yeah but in my humble experience I've found that ah BIG Horse and Go Fast = Deep Pocketz or somethin' like that. At least there seamz to be some what of ah positive correlation there. Most of us are way happy just to sit in our lazy boy bucketz or bench and smile that knowing smile that tellz the world that we've won no matter the speed! Have fun 'n be happy here on which ever trail you travel, Jer
