I took my 67 New Yorker for a long drive a couple months ago and at the end of it there was a some kind of noisy leak. It looks like the right exhaust manifold has a leak. I hear tell there may not be a gasket or maybe there is an O-ring I should look at. So, what is truth here? I don't mind ordering the parts needed, or even ones I don't just in case, so tell me what I need, please!

From the factory these cars did not have exhaust manifold gaskets. Over time with heat cycling things may change. They do sell gaskets now for these, it would not hurt to install a set.

I am constantly annoyed by what sounds like a manifold leak under mild acceleration. It seems to disappear under heavier load (mostly likely drowned out by the exhaust). Installing gaskets would probably help but how many manifold bolts should I expect to snap?

Are you sure the leak is at the manifold?

If the leak sounds like it's on the pass side and it's the manifold it could be at the butterfly mechanism's shaft or it could also be a cracked manifold if it's not a gasket.

I would hope it's the header pipe to manifold gasket.

It's a lot easier chasing down an exhaust leak if you can get the car on a lift. Good luck and let us know what you find. Hopefully something simple and not expensive.

I'll try to spend some time on it this weekend and report back. I hear it on the driver's side but then again I've never been a passenger!
Exhaust system from the manifolds back is fairly new and in good condition, I will also check the connection point at the manifolds.

On my car, it makes some noise when cold, but goes away when warm. Another Imperialist suggested that I not f--/ with it, rather than risk breaking off a stud and having the joy of a bigger problem.

I think your issue is different and you're getting the leak while hot, after a long drive, right?
