First I need to confirm what trans my car has. Its a 66 Fury 3 with a 318 Poly. I think it s a 727 but need someone with more experience to tell me.

Second if it is a 727 is it 2 or 3 speed.

Third will a 904 work and is that something to do or avoid.

Welcome FCBO Scoot.
Your Plymouth is a Fury III (Roman numerals) with a Small Block 318 Poly and a Small Block 3 speed 727 Torqueflite as all 727 TFs were 3 speeds.
Why a 904? Makes no sense.
Pics of the car would be appreciated in this forum.

YO SCOOTER. Stay with what Mother put in it when she built it! The 904 iz for Valiants and other A-Body 'Lil carz. They're a good tran's for what they are but the 727 haz more Beef all the way through,(read hard tah hurt) Jer

No gaurantee that ma mopar put a 727 in it. Check your pan shape. I have seen low end Furies with 904's. Especially if two barrel cars, and if it is a Fury I or II....

I have a '68 Fury III with a 904. It is a 318 with a Carter 2 barrel.

Pan shape was how I confirmed this on mine and this image helped me out cause I couldn't find a stamping as mentioned above. Good luck!

Also I'm sure same with the c bodies but on my coronet I had 318/904 combo when I put 273/727 combo I had to get a differnt driveshaft. The 440/727 eventually went in used the same shaft. One of my grandfather's things were always to pull the 904s and put a 727 even if it didnt need it. He always said he didnt trust the 904.

Interesting to know about the different drive shaft, thanks for the tidbit.

My 904 is original to the car, and although I don't know if it was rebuilt or not, at 145k+ miles and counting, it shifts like new! Of course, I will also upgrade to a 727 when I swap out my 318.

I appreciate the welcome although I have been here a bit, but thats cool thanks.
I wasn't sure about what trans the car had as this is my first Mopar and I'm not knowledgeable in identifying them.
The only reason this question of 727 and 904 came up is my trans is leaking like the Valdez and makes a bit of noise. I found a good 904 but didnt know the difference.
My car is super low and a bastard to work on so I wanted to cover my bases of replacing vs. rebuilding.

68Blackbird its Fury III not Fury 3 ; )

Per the Request I will oblige you with a picture.

Nobody notices my car....they just notice the blinds in the back lol.

I know it's low but you do realize you can lift it by the chassis points, right? ;) It will have a 904 in it unless someone upgraded it later. Only factory 318s that got 727s were in trucks and some later 318-4bbl pass cars.

3 Of my 318 2bbl parts cars have had 727 in them. There La 318's. His is a 318 poly.

My car sits so low that a regular 3 ton floor jack will not go under the body mounts. I have to take small scissor jack and lift it up to get the big jack under it. It drags on 4 post lifts and I dont even think a 2 post lift will go under it. I did use one of those Nascar style jacks that worked but Im too tight to buy one.

The car is all original too (besides lowering) so what it came from the factory is whats still there.

The 66 parts book shows no 904's behind a 318 poly. The 67 LA318 started seeing them, and as time went on by 68, they were common, even in a C body. You could order the 727, and by 69' even the 8 1/4 started showing up. As time went by, cheaper, cheaper, cheaper,,,,

YO Scooter, Go to your local lumber yard and buy "1" 10' long 2X12 and cut it in half. Then make one more cut on both of those 5 "ers into 1, 2X 24" and 1, 2X 36 " piece. OH, did I mention while yer buyin' also buy one tube of liquid nailz and squirt one side of each 12X24 piece and place one each on one end of the two 12X36 pieces so you now have quasi ramps from 2"s of 12X12 and 4" of 4X24 and walk away for 24 hourz and let the liquid nailz do what it doez. Keep 'um dry and your grand children can use them too when the time comez and they will love granpa. One other thing I'll lay on yeah. Try to making friendz with the manager or your local Discount Tire Store. They replace ALL of there low profile heavy duty 2 ton floor jackz every year or so(or quicker) and guess what they do with the perfictly good onez with maybe ah few scratches on 'um? Ask that tire store manager AFTER YOU MAKE FRIENDZ WITH HIM, I did and guess what. We ain't kissin' buddyz but I now own 2, 40 old 4 1/2" high and 1, almost new 2 1/2" high (for cheap) at the hoisting pad floor jackz and the 4 1/2"ers are jest sitin' there gettin' more and more dusty...BTW, I to like some of my ridez runnin' with the torsion bar addjusterz backed off to drop the nose jest ah bit, Jer
