Hey everyone haven't been on in a while because things have been hectic but now I have time to play with my 66 sport fury. My newest issue is the reman carb I bought from classic industries, it's an oem stromberg exactly like the original. My stocker was thrashed so I bought this one because it's supposedly like brand new and tuned just like they were from the factory which I figured would be perfect. Turns out it seems to leak like a sieve and it goes through gas like it thinks it's a pro stocker. It went through almost a gallon of gas just idling in less than 15 minutes which does NOT seem good. Anyone have any ideas on where I should look first. I'm tempted to buy a new holley or edelbrock 2 barrel but I just got this carb and I'd like to make it work and this engine is gonna come out some point in the future, I just wanna enjoy it for a bit before I tear her apart.

That stinks, sorry to hear about this. I would check around the fuel filter and the fuel pump and see if they are wet or possibly leaking. Do you smell gas under the hood? My fuel pump worked fine but leaked like a sieve.

If its just an issue at idle, maybe the idle air screws aren't seated/set properly. I am by no means an expert on the matter of carburetors. I rebuilt mine but i can't imagine a leak of the magnitude you describe without being able to see fuel around the carb or the car running at a high/poor idle because it is getting so much fuel.

There are many experts on this site who can help you out with the carb itself, just some ideas based on my recent experience with a leaky fuel pump. Good luck!

Edit - I noticed your title indicates it is running rich. If the fuel pump is indeed fine and it is only at idle this occurs I would start by first trying to set my idle air screws using a vacuum gauge and tach.

With the car running tap the top of the carb with the plastic handle of a big screw driver. I bet the needle and seat are stuck and allowing fuel to just pour through the carb.

Ya the carb is brand new and the rep at classic industries told me that it was rebuilt, jetted and tuned to factory specs and to not touch any of the adjustments if it was being used on a stock motor but it's definitely leaking out of the carb somewhere because the manifold is wet underneath. I'm not sure exactly where it's coming from because I haven't started it in a few months and I have a horrible memory. Other than that the fuel pump and filter are brand new with 3 hours of run time max, almost all of that time is at idle too. Thanks everyone for the help I'd really like to get a little drive time out of her this summer before I take the knife to it.

Ditto to thrashing cows, this definately seems like you have an issue with the needle and seat not properly adjusted or has dirt caught in it causing the fuel to overflow and burn rich.

You're doing it wrong :D

I would send the carb back before they tell you the warranty expired and get an Edelbrock or Holley.

Bob, I'm buying you an Edelbrock T-shirt, an Edelbrock cap, and a pair of Edelbrock underwear shorts personally signed by Vic Jr.
You earned it.

You got that right commando1, I'll just give it a little tap with my 2.5 pound sledgehammer hahaha. And I would send the carb back but the warranty already ran out, guess that's what I get for procrastinating.

I've got a 3lbs hammer, and a maul if you need it...lol.
It's probably jsut basic float adjustment and tuning you need. Nothing out of a box (even brandy new rather than rebuilt) is perfect out of the package. I mentioned this before - I'm a few towns over from Hampton if you want a hand. I'm fairly busy this weekend (getting a Chevelle of all things) but a weeknight or next weekend would work.

Thanks! I've just had great luck over the years with Eddie products.

I, myself never thought that I could pull an Eddie carb out of the box and pretty much not have to make any adjustments to get it to run right. The first carb I thought I was just lucky, but after another carb on another car and it ran perfect out of the box.... made me a believer in Eddie carbs. A can of carb cleaner once a year is all that I ever needed.

Hey thanks moper I'll keep that in mind. Soon as I get a chance I'm gonna check the adjustments and the float needle. But i just got a call from my sister that I don't have any water at my house now so the 66 is gonna have to hit the back burner yet again.
