Just worked a deal on this 69 Newport factory four color car.

I think your all thinking im going to paint it like a hurst with the sportgrain, the hood will be solid gray like the rest of the car, it just adds some shape to that large flat hood. But if I think it looks bad with the sportgrain, I'll just take all the sportgrain trim off and paint the car flat black. Because it's my car and I can build it how I want. :) this is 'Mercia!!!

The car really will look good, and no matter what I do to it, it beats sitting in the junk yard for another 10 years. People on this site have looked at and passed this car because it wasn't a factory 440 regardless of the other options. So the vin didn't say it had a 440, what stops someone putting one in it? Sometimes we put to much into that little letter in the vin number.

I had read about the translucent woodgrain previously, but the only reference I found was on Wikipedia, which has an undocumented reference to it in the 1971 section:

"Monaco station wagons, which in 1969 and '70 had worn their woodgrain trim on the lower bodysides, got completely new woodgrain up high on the sides, even around the windows. The new vinyl decals were translucent, allowing some of the paint color to show through."

Oh man, I'm going to win some drinks at my bar Thurs night with that one.
Obscuria Uselessitae if there ever wax one. Cool!

I never assumed you would be trying to make the car into the 300 hurst with the hood. Figured you'd paint it whatever colour you feel is right for the car. Hope you never decide to loose the sports grain option. Regardless of any other things you change on your car...I hope you keep that one. That alone is the neatest, and rarest option the car should be sporting. ;)

Bingo. Some people get to caught up on whats on the damn VIN tag.....360 stripper or 440 all optioned out, it is STILL mopar. These are not Rolls Royce Phantoms. I say go for it.

I personally like them as original as possible especially if they're unusual but that's just me.

I'm not advocating 26" rims with neon lights under the frame and angle eyes and all that other garbage mind you.

Rims and tires don't alter the car, just the taste.
Incorrect body parts, cheepo flat black paint, and engine swaps may work on some cars, but a very unique factory creation isn't one of them.

All a matter of opinion Wil. I won't bash the guy before he starts his project. I'd love to see his vision executed nicely. It all mopar....sometimes plain jane factory correct resurrections, one after another and another can be, well, boring.

I honestly love the color combo and won't be changing that. Since I have nice bucket seats and a buddy seat available, I do want to switch to those as I like them better than the bench. I think the hurst hood is going to look really good on it as it is going to be solid gray, just adds a little shape to the front. I think the hide away headlights on the 300 look so much better, but I am going to try and modify the grill with the Newport emblems, same with the 300 tail lights and panel. As unique as the car is, I want to make it my car, I want it to be the only one like it ever. I do think I want to run a 440 and if funds allow, maybe a six pack just for fun. I really want to make this car fun and as with all my cars, I want to drive it. I don't want a perfect car.

This one is far from plain Jane originally though...

J-Macs, I understand you. As said before, you saved the car from the abyss. No one else did. So, no need to explain the rest of us why you want/are going to do the mods you are going to do.

Or hey, why don't you let one of us to buy the car from you and keep it all original?

Uhhhhmmmm.... How many of us is going to volunteer? To restore the car complete as original? Seriously?

I love originality almost as much as any of these guys against all mods. Really, I do. As a Finn, I have learned originality is not always possible to get. Sometimes it takes too much time and effort and costs. That's the way it is. So I'm use to make/and see compromises. If the car REALLY is worth it, we'll keep it as original as possible or restore it. Sometimes we do it here even if the car isn't worth it... Many c-body mopars we restore here in Finland, the rest of you guys wouldn't even touch! If someone doubts that, I can show you pics to back it up.

J-Macs, you are going to make this car unique, one of one in your own taste. I wish you all the luck with this project. I just hope you'll keep the original hood though, just for a spare. ;)

Thanks furyfinn, there's an idea, if someone will trade me a 69 300 2dr in at least the same condition and pay all transport costs both ways, then I'll trade. :) otherwise I'll build it to my taste.

I've seen some really nice C-bodies from over there. They look awesome and I am glad you all make them unique.

As for the hood, the hurst hood I am getting needs the under hood bracing, so I will have to take the skin off of the original hood and use the under bracing. I was going to keep all the parts I take off, but don't really have a place to store them. So will probably sell them, that includes the grille, bumpers, seats, and tail lights. The tail light panel I will be keeping as it is specific to the sportgrain.

Thats a fair offer j-mac.
Just trying to instill the historical significance of keeping such a unique car as OEM as possible.
It sounds like you have a plan and I think you will end up with a very nice car ..... however it gets done. I wish you luck with it, and keep us up to date with the progress.

Nobody thought it so special that they stepped up to the plate if only to restore it as original.
I'm with him on his right to do what he wants with it.
Nothing's done yet. Any last minute offers?

I'm not convinced with this method of thinking. Who knew the car was stashed away in some obscure salvage yard......? Not even a half dozen folks who would give a hoot probably.

J-mac found it, recognized the value and saved it.
Being as unique a car as it is, it will take a special guy with a lot of skill to bring it back to it's original glory. He's out there but it will take time to hook up.
If I were in J-macs position, and a 69 300 was "the dream car", I would load up CL and any other method or forum with ads making the car known and avaliable before setting sale on a "restro-mod" project.

If no takers in a reasonable time period........ Go with Plan A.

I do have to admit, a 300 sportgrain does intreage me. But done as the factory might have done it.

I agree 100% with Will.
Try out some ads and see if you can fetch an 300. Lots of them out there.

Carsten
