The tires on my 63 New Yorker were probably 30 years old or so and in pretty bad shape. I definitely prefer the thinner whitewalls on this car like it had, it looks classier IMHO. I couldn't find them in my size (8.50-14) 225/75/14 and I didn't like the wide whitewall look on this car maybe if it was older it would look good. I didn't want to spend $209. per tire either from Coker, so I went with a Hankook Optimo H275 blackwall 225/70/14, they're a little lower in height but not much. The ride definitely improved over the bias tires and having more tread on them helps. I bought them from Discount Tire Direct and had them installed at a Firestone dealer near me. I brought the rims and tires in because they were a little leery on working on a car it's age, which is probably a good idea with the left hand threads on the drivers side. I actually stripped a nut, so better me than them. I really don't like the look though to be honest, it looks more like an old cop car now. I guess I'll get used to it. I also changed the shocks which wasn't to bad of a job. I'm sure it needs an alignment too which I'll have done after I replace the brake power booster and master cylinder.

I just can't bring myself to bring my own eggs and bacon to a restaurant and ask them to cook it for me.

I agree with you totally. That particular car without whitewalls just doesn't look right.

You might try to scare up a set of Magnum 500 wheels and re-mount your new tires. I think those wheels with black walls actually look pretty good.

Well, how about a picture of the car with the new rubber.

Those are really nice looking wheels, I wonder if they would look right with the 63 New Yorker body style. Here's a few pictures and I would have bought the tires from Firestone but they only sold that size in a BF Goodrich white letter tire.2014-10-03 17.17.25.jpg2014-10-03 17.17.51.jpg

Double check...Hankook had a $15 per tire rebate going on for the blackwalls for a maximum of $60. I purchased four several weeks ago for my '66 Toronado size p235-75r15 w/w for $75 each thru Walmart.

Thanks, I'll have to check, I paid about $76.00 a tire. I always liked the Toronado's from that era!

15" whitewalls can still be had, 14" ...... not so avaliable anymore. I needed to replace one on my 65 Coronet. It took me a month to find a match, (Firestone), and they told me it was the last of their stock.

You may be able to locate a set of port-A-walls on ebay.

Thanks for the information, I bought some probably around 10 years ago for another car I had in that size 14" thin w/w from Tire Rack, but I guess there's not a big enough demand for that size in w/w. I was looking at those port-A-walls on ebay and from Mooneyes, but I read some pros and cons on them and probably won't use them.

The trick to installing port a walls without the rim leaks is to install them with the tire laying flat on the ground, careful centering and a very thin coat of grease on the tire bead and port a wall bead.

I like to apply a thin film of grease on the tire bead anyways. It will prevent rust between the rim and tire.

Thanks, that's good to know if I decide to go that route. It sounds like you used them before and installed them yourself?

Aaarrgghh! Compared to the white wall look, those black walls just totally kill the look of your car. Kinda makes it look like an old NJ Turnpike police car . . .

I would be careful on Tires made in Korea (Hankook) or China (Walmart) = JUNK

and that is a bad thing?

Now if it were a sedan it might be a different story.

I ordered some Plasti-dip white spray paint and some thin masking tape. There's an outline on the tire in the center that should make it easy to mask off and paint it white. I'm going to see how it turns out, if it looks bad it peels it off. I'll take some pictures when I'm done, it won't be for another week or so. It's worth the $20.00 or so to see if it works, and I don't have to have the tire bead broken down as I would if I went with the port-a-walls.
