Hi all,

i bought the car a few months ago and slowly working my way through the varies issues. Started on the power steering leak(s) last week. Ive replaced the pressure hose as that was weeping and just degreased everything and will try to isolate the leak over the coming days.

My question at this time is, is the power steering system vented or non-vented? the cap on the pump says vented. However im not convinced its the correct cap as its very loose and rattles around when running and doesnt seem quite right..

Thanks!

All the caps from that era are vented - EPA weirdos didn't exist then. Thank crook Nixon for the Frankenstein that is the EPA. Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin.

Incidentally - replace all of the o-rings in the valve body - mark it with a scribe before you pull it - or your Fury will 'self steer' to the left or right.

I found that out when I was seventeen - a LONG time ago.

lol, thanks for the history aswell! ;) i guess it doesnt matter if the cap is loose then.

Yeah i just thread the other thread about power steering before posting this. Hopefully thats where my leak is coming from and it will be an easy fix. The pictures are a great help!

just out of curiosity, how hard is it to rebuild the entire box? if im replacing the valve body is it worth doing the rest of the box is it something i should pay someone else to do? i have a service manual but i figured id identify the source of the leak first!

I've seen boxes from '61's that get away easily with a valve body o-ring replacement. If you want to totally rebuild yours, get a Pittman arm puller, and then a spanner that can take the top off. In my opinion, a rebuild is a waste of time - in other words - I wager your box could go through ten Chryslers and still be as good as new.

I'll take your advice! Thanks for the replies and I'll let you know how it goes!

Please do.

appears you would be correct Preston.

I disassembled the control valve and found a blown seal. cleaned up and replaced the o rings but it appears i didnt quite have the spool valve in the correct position as the lever chipped and also damaged the spool valve in the process.

anyone know where i can source another lever and spool valve?
i havent tried local yet as its late Saturday afternoon here, but i dont like my chances of finding anything anyway.

ive attached some pictures to help, i think the spool valve might be reusable as its only those chips? again, any advice/help is much appreciated!!

thanks
