The Bluesmobile

Thanks Stan! Idk bout all that! You did a hell of a job on that patch of the quarter I saw a while ago.

I am proud as a peacock with how the drivers floor came out.

My time off got approved, only a couple more weeks till the garlits show! Looking forward to meeting you, and everyone else!

Your work does not disappoint as usual, very nice.

Post plenty of pictures.

Got the back corner welded in. Currently in the process of welding in the inner trunk pocket wall. I need to take a break from metal work for a while..

I'm currently waiting on my rebuild kit for the leaf springs. While I'm waiting, figured I'd start the clean up on em. Got one side torn down. Still need to get the front bushing out.. Still wondering what to do about the pads that go in between the leafs. The spring company told me not to worry about reinstalling them when re assembly comes. But Idk... Think I'll just salvage whats left of them, and use them again.

The hangers cleaned up pretty good! Was looking for bare metal paint at the store, but couldn't find any. So now I have aluminum hangers! lol

The springs are almost done! Figure I've got about 20 hours into these damn things lol. They cleaned up pretty nice though. A few pits here and there. I brush painted em with good ole rustoleum. The bushings were a lot easier going then I thought they would be. Was able to install the new ones with the bench vise. All new hardware, except for the pads that go in between. I cleaned them up, and re installed what was left of them. I moved the work into the spare room/parts room.

Finally got to use some of the stuff in these boxes!

Passenger side all done.

The driver side is drying out in the garage at the moment. Some of the Halloween stuff hasn't been put away yet. Emily has been keeping me company lol

I've been on the phone back and forth with firm feel. I ordered a set of hanger bolts (thinking they were the press in bolts/studs, that attach the hanger to the frame) But they were the big bolt for the spring. I'd keep em, and use em, but their too big. Dick couldn't believe a c body would have a smaller bolt then the other lines. I'll be shipping them out tomarrow.

They don't carry the studs. Anyone know a good place to get them? I found these on ebay, will probably grab them..4

A couple comments on the paint scheme
The doors are all black inside and out and only the door skin, literally. Just the panel to the inside where it is pinched around the core.

The full jambs front and rear are black right out to the rain rail pinch weld..

The B-pillar is all black.

I'm pretty sure the 74 followed the same scheme as the earlier years.

Thank you Alan. We've talked about this quite a bit over on the bluesmobile board. The bluesmobile paint scheme is totally wrong, compared to a real CHP car, or Illinois car. Hollywood did their own magic on the cars. Hell, they even dyed the interior a different shade of tan for the hero car.

Heres a couple movie shots..

I can't locate the original post, but here is the "correct" bluesmobile Paint layout on the pillars. This is a members car over there. There was a photo of one of the original blumos like this out there.

Ok, that is one detail I never noticed (well I haven't seen the film 30+ years).

Did the studio use retired CHP cars? At one time I thought that was the case.

It is interesting.

It was rumored that the cars were retired CHP cars, shipped to Chicago for the movie. However most of the stunt men, and crew claimed them to be regular civilian small block cars. They used a total of 13 cars in the movie. The shitty thing is non of the cars survived. They were all scrapped at the end of the movie. It was also rumored for several years that Dan kept a car after shooting the movie, then later on sold it to a friend.. However a guy who is in contact with Dan on the blumo board, asked Dan about it. Dan said that never happened, and there was no car. T

here have been countless idiots through the years selling Monaco's claiming theirs to be an original screen used car, when you can CLEARLY see it is not. The worst one I've seen was a couple years back. Guy selling a '80s diplomat, claiming is to be a real bluesmobile. Really?? lol

Took the shock pates from the '67 over to a friends with a drill press. Had to drill out the center leaf spring locating hole, to accept the new 3/8 nut. After drilling, cleaned em up, and painted.

Driver side spring, is assembled. Rear suspension is done. Do still need a shackle.

Was wondering, anyone know what these are for??

They are sandwiched in between the rear hanger, and frame. When I took the springs out, the drivers side fell right off, onto the ground. The passenger side stuck on, after prying it off (thinking it was rusted together) it turns out it was welded in the middle to the hanger. I'll just sandwich them back in when installing. But what he hell are they? Exhaust hangers? Mounts for a hitch?? lol

Back to metal work at the moment....

13 cars and many different camera angles to make it look like hundreds. I remember seeing the movie many times while it was still in the theaters, that was the only way to do it before cable and DVR. We would count the times the same bumper flew through the air. I think it's funny there is such a cult following now. It came out about the time I got my first car, a convertible. I still have a briefcase full of sun glasses I kept in the back seat. I'd hand them out to everyone riding with me while blasting the Peter Gunn theme on the single dash speaker. That was a memorable summer.

BTW, great progress on the metal fab for the quarters. I'm making plenty of reference notes and these pics will come in handy when I get to that point.

Been a busy few days. Finished up the inner wall.

Then moved on to the quarter. Pulled the quarter panel from the other car out. First thing needed, was to replace the bottom edge, after that fill in a few pin holes...

After that was done cut out the section needed, and welded it onto the car.

Spent today grinding the welds down. Then baked the undercoating off the back side. I started out cleaning the metal along the trim holes to fill, but ended up stripping pretty much the whole damn quarter! Layed down a quick coat of primer.

Can't say I'm extremely happy with it. I ended up welding it in at a bit more of an angle on accident. It looked a lot better after grinding the welds down, but theres still an edge there it seems... Not as smooth as I was hoping. But it'll get the job done.

I feel your pain....looks like the Firebird I did last year, my Fury isn't nearly as intensive....but there is twice as much of it....good work dude.
