66 fury III 2 door hardtop needs a front end

I will post some more pictures soon, but just a quick update. I have about 60% of the car stripped to bare metal. The person that restored this prior to me, was a real hack. They would just weld a piece of metal for backing and then put as much filler in it till it got smooth. At least when I am done with it, it will be done right.

So far we have cut of the passenger quarter panel and welded in the donor inner panel from the parts car. We are starting to fit the new quarter panel I bought off ebay. The quality is decent. Thinner metal that we would have liked but much easier than fabricating our own. Next steps are to cut the driver side quarter off, which will be a much small fix as it isn't as butchered as the passenger side. From there I will strip the rest of the car and find more issues we need to fix. Glad I took on a small project and made it a huge one. I keep telling myself this will be awesome when it is done!

chiming in after just watching this one for a while - it will be awesome! looking forward to new pics

And remember, if it wasn't for previous owners afro-engineering what would we do with all of that spare time we had - hahahaa

As you can see we cut the whole bottom of the passenger quarter panel off. It was either bondo or just in terrible shape. The other picture is the replacement panel I purchased. Also you can see the hatchet patch job the previous restorer did on the pilar.

Keep at it. You'll have a nice car when you're done. I'm just dreading to see what my car looks like under the paint when I ever decide to tackle the metalwork.

Hope you plan on keeping the car green, I love to see another high impact '66 running around. Just be prepared for the haters, wrong color this, wrong blue that, etc etc. They do tend to shut up when I ask them to line up against me tho.

Personally I didn't care for the '69 scoop, the RO/WO fits the cars lines so much better, the guy I had paint my car tried to talk me out of installing it 3 times, hes like, you never see a hood that old, that straight again LOL...love it!

Panel is fitting pretty good. I know you have an issue with them but it was that or nothing. We were gonna have to fabricate something anyways.

We will keep the car green but we are going to add some pearl in the green.

check out the 2006 charger sublime green metallic. it has a yellow pearl in it, an awesome colour

The new panel is definitely thinner. We will be doing something to add some rigidity to it. It is definitely workable though. You have to have some body working skills to get them to work but I am looking at this from a perspective of how long it would have taken to fabricate it ourselves. Full quarter panels are not easy or cheap to come by.

take your time welding that panel in. That flimsy metal will warp quickly. That is the reason I didnt go with the replacement panels and had the body shop doing the work fabricate the patches around the wheel wells.

We are. Just got hung tonight. luckily the guy helping me is a body guy by trade and has been welding on cars for 40+ years.

I've got to do the same to the wifes 65 fury III. Only this car is original except where her dad started body work. I'm sure ill have to redo all of it! lol Hate thin patch panels but what else can we do. I don't have tooling to make them. Looking good by the way!

We got a lot more welding done today. I will post up some pictures tomorrow so you can see. These panels worked out really well. They needed a lot of massaging but they are definitely better than anything we could have made. My only complaint is the gauge of metal. I would be interested to ask the guy I bought them from if his source could get them made in a thicker gauge.

Here is the driver's side currently. I just completed sanding the rear quarter down. Probably only 30% of the green exterior paint remains.

Here is a quick pic to the new quarter panel Going on. He was working on it while I took it.

The top side of the panel welding was finished tonight. We are going to start the bottom portion tomorrow. I believe we will finish this quarter and then get the front of the car primed. From there we will fix the driver side quarter and then move to the little crap.

Driver side mirror was relocated too close to the vent window and it won't open. Fix some pitting issues on the roof.

The new quarter is on and I didn't get a picture before we started getting some filler on it to level it out. Here are some pics. I must say I am so happy how well the panel turned out. I was concerned with what kind of quality I was getting when I ordered it. Looks great. If any of you are interested I will get the name of the guy that I ordered it from. Buying the quarter panels has put us way ahead of schedule. Fabricating our own would have really taken us some time.
