Ive got another one for you guys today

My speedo needle was jumping all around when first got the car a few months back and cable sounded like it was binding, so I unscrewed from dash - but left screwed in to tranny. Ive just recently had the car on the road and Im getting a squeak from under car when driving - seems like its coming from the transmission - sounds like a bad roof vent or squirrel cage. Super loud and annoying.

On drive home the other night the squeak began to come and go, and then rounding a corner near home it sort of made a grinding sound.

ANybody have experience with the plastic gear going bad? Did it make similar noise? Chances of it being related to speedo cable/ speedo gear?

Could be the speedo cable, but it also could be U-Joints.

You can unscrew the cable from the trans. Just the cable though and not the gizmo that holds the gear. That would eliminate that possibility pretty easy.

It could also be the rear end. The grinding noise going around a corner sorta sounds like a rear bearing.

thanks John - that helps - wasn't sure if I could remove the cable without tranny draining. It doesn't sound like a u joint or rear bearing whine - its more of a high pitched squeak. Is there a way to remove the gear and operate the vehicle without tranny draining? like can I remove the gear and reinstall the gizmo that holds the gear?

I realize I should have the FSM to rely on - thanks in advance.

You can pull the speedo drive and pull the gear off fluid will run out when you pull the drive, jacking up the rear only helps reinstall cable if you take it for a ride so the small shaft does not fall out. I doubt it is the plastic gear it would melt or break first. I'm betting on cable or something internal in trans. I would try a drive with cable disconnected first.

Cables must be lubed occasionally. A sticking cable can make the (plastic) driving gear go bad and that just means more work.

yerp - I get that - ive no clue what the PO did - assumed nothing - Im hoping it is just the cable but Im thinking it may have compromised the gear - haven't crawled under yet - should get to it by the weekend.

if I understands correctly I can operate without a cable but you cant operate without the plastic gear installed? Is that correct?

I believe oil would leak out of the gear shaft hole without the gear in place.

I've never had a speedo make noise from the bottom end.. And I have stripped the gears in the transmissions by not installing them right...
But I know a dry U joint can squeak. Might want to try and grease it, also look for exhaust issues or mount troubles. They're all kind of in that area and all can make noises if there's a problem.

yea, I pulled the gear last night - somehow ive got the later model cable and gear

but it looked fine - ill check u joints next

I don't think it is in gear or drive. Exhaust is a good place to look as mentioned, will make a god awful squeal.

totally misdiagnosed this one - ruled the cable out by removing the gear - test run, squeak still there. Went to rear ujoint - it wasnt good but it wasnt blown apart but i changed anyway, test run, squeak still there, then grind, then uh oh what the.........wheel bearing failure!!

thanks for help guys on points i was asking for

now ill be over to the brake forum i guess seeing how i obliterated the bearing, drum, and shoes might be a good time to do the disc upgrade....
