dudes -

I read somewhere that the factory didn't put gaskets in between the manifold and the log header. I have an exhaust leak, so now what.

just put gaskets in, even if the factory did not?

did they really not?

That is the truth, two perfectly machined surfaces that only have exhaust gasses flowing through don't require gaskets. Today I would say most of the time gaskets are used.

I have used gaskets in the past...I have ALWAYS developed a leak eventually. I stopped using those crappy gaskets and just use a good High Temp RTV silicone and bolt them up. Never had a leak since. And you should have seen the pits on the gasket surface on my passenger side HP manifold for the 440 in my wagon. Clearly this manifold sat for a lot of years with a gasket between it and the head....it was pitted very deeply. Smeared a healthy coating of RTV on it and popped it on...no leaks after 6 years. ;)

I use gaskets on my 383 because of irregular mating surfaces. ALWAYS has a small leak without them.

When resurfaced the manifolds do a good job, when gaskets are Installed, they get old eventually and blow out. When they blow out you have to resurface again. That is the reason mopar didn't install them in the 60's at least on the 383-440.

No gaskets as mentioned high temp rtv or high tak from permatex. High temp rtv orange stuff also works well on header collector/street hook ups.

Every time I see this this thread title I have to resist an urge to make a joke about muffler bearings

so there .. that's out of the way

Carry on

There's a company called Remflex that makes a great thick gaskets. They are not cheap but very good gaskets. If your surfaces aren't flush with each other you will have a leak and the thin gaskets will eventually fail, these will fix that problem. Good Luck
