Great pic!! Is it a coincidence that it's all winged mopars leading the pack? I never did understand NASCARs dislike of road courses tho.

Road course! Cool!

Glenn
(I have driven on the track at Waktins Glen)

I've never driven a road course either. On my bucket list. Always wanted to put a 318/A833 in Triumph TR6. And do a little M3 huntin'

Looks like Buddy Baker in second row red car.
Glotzbach in yellow car.

i know for sure Bobby Issacs drove the red K & K insurance car #71 for 1970. Harry Hyde was his crew cheif. They took the super speedway wing car to Bonneville & won class with it. Pretty sure they used a Kieth Black Hemi for that. Issacs won the NASCAR championship in 70. He was an awesome drive who's career was cut short due to a tragic incident in 75 at a short track race in North Carolina. He did TV spots for Dodge around here. Glotzbach drove the #99 Dow Chemical car. Buddy may have driven it too. Are you sure Glotzbach drove a yellow Wing car. I have pics of James Hylton in a Yellow Wing car.

Buddy Baker drove a red and white car too. Later a black top was added.
link below has photo of Glotzbach with yellow car.

Buddy drove the Cotton Owens Dodge in 70 Red & white. He dove a #11 Dodge for petty in 71-72 Pete Hamilton drove the other Petty wing car in 70. And won Daytona. He got in trouble with the Army & the Pettys hired Baker in 71 This was a much different time in Nascar as compared to today. No teams ran the full curcuit. Petty usually ran the most races, but never all. So drivers would be in different cars. Bobby Allison drove a chevelle on short tracks & a Dodge on Super speedways. The Chevelle was his own car. Ford legand Bud Moore's son litlle Bud drove a wing car in a few races. That yellow wing car may have been a Ray Fox car. He was from Indiania & so was Glotzbach. So its likely they worked together. I believe Fox was Dodges first factory team in 1964 fielding many cars, but their main drivers where AJ Foyte & Bobby Issacs. As the 70's came & Nascar grew the schedule was cut back to modern tracks. Nashville was the last dirt track & went away in 81 I believe. I have a picture of Pete Hamilton in a beautifull 71 Plymouth with #6 on it. 6 was Cotton Owens #. He left the sport in the early 70's as an owner & built/repaired cars for many years on. He did the Mary Robbins Dodges.

Ok just read that article. The yellow car is Talmidge Prince. He bought it from James Hylton & kept Hyltons #. 99 is Glotzbach & is probably a Fox car. 6 is Baker & is Cotton Owens car. Gurney drove the 42 at Riverside then Hamilton took over & # changed to 40. I remember Hylton driving Fords in the early 70's. I got pics around here somewhere so that's likely why he sold the Dodge to Prince.

I must have misunderstood, I am not an expert by any means. Loved that time with all the wing cars. I started looking at a list of all the drivers that had wing cars and realized that Ford and GM must have been really worried.= about loosing their drivers.

No expert here either just a hugh fan. The wing cars where dominate at the high speed tracks. The Fords could keep up. On the mid size tracks the Fords did much better. They had a good car in the Talledega Torino. 429 Boss Hemi engine. They had very good drivers. David Pearson & Leroy Yarborough had stellar seasons in 69. Chevy won a few short track races.

I believe Prince Talmadge was killed in a crash while qualifying his wing car at Daytona in 1970. I think he only had the car a short time.
