Auto Glass Company

There's probably a bunch of videos on youtube.

You need one of these to get the trim off. You may have to find one on Ebay though. Gearwrench (who own KD Tools) doesn't list it anymore.

You slide the hook under the trim and unhook the clips. It takes a little patience, but this is the best tool I've ever found to do the job.

I like using piano wire to cut the old ribbon. I get a piece long enough to put through the edge of the window on the top and then push back it out through the edge on the bottom. I can then stand outside the car and saw through it.

Harbor Fright has a kit now. I've never used it, but it looks like it would work nicely.

Once you've "sawed" your way around the window, get a helper to remove the glass.

Scrap the old ribbon off the glass and window frame. This is a good time to replace all the old molding clips.

Lay the new ribbon in and put the window back in. You'll have to use some rubber blocks at the base of the glass to push it up into position. They used to come with the ribbon kit.

Push on the window gingerly to make the seal.

CRLaurence shows it available...they are a wholesale distributor for the glass industry and would have other supplies as well. If you can get them to sell to you. I usually can find a way to purchase from distributors or direct with a little time on the phone.

I have a glass guy that I use for all our replacements, the risk for them is in breaking your glass when removing it.

I get that. Thats why safelight wouldn't do it. To tell me they won't reinstall my good old glass is just stupid.

Lets ask this question, is your glass glued in, or retained by a weather-strip? If it is glued in keep cutting slowly with a Stanley knife a little at a time, (a warm garage helps). If held in by rubber see if it is old and brittle, if it is coat it as best as you can with Goop hand cleaner, the lanoline will help soften the rubber, go slow with the removal tool and work the glass out. (Yes I have changed many pieces of glass).

According to my co-workers cousin who own's his own glass shop and has been in the auto glass business for 25 years, make sure you do it when it a hot day, it'll soften up the goo, I broke one windshield and learned this the hardway.

From all the replies so far, it confirms what I think.
You have a 50/50 chance of not cracking the glass.
You feeling lucky?

You know what it means when a guy like me has a 50/50 chance? Time for a new windshield.

New Formal windshield and rear glass is very hard to find.

I'm looking at one of each on the shelf in my shop as we speak... :D

Lucky you!

I had 2 NOS windshields. I broke one anf left the other one in Indiana with Newp Mike. I didn't want to break it driving back to Maryland with the NYB. The only place it would fit was in the trunk.

You should have just taped it in place over the other one.

Well I got lucky. Picked up this trim tool set from harbor freight.

Windshield/Door Trim Tool Set 4 Pc

Really the only tool needed was the 2nd one in from the right.

This made quick work getting the trim off. Once the trim was off, got to see the bad spot. Really wasn't that bad. Just 2 pin holes towards the top of the curve. I taped the wondow up, and filled the holes with a little weld, then grinded down. Window didn't have to come out!! Ill add a little filler to pretty it up a little more when body work time comes. Also wanna polish the trim up.

Bob, this ones for you. Heres an idea of how the tool works to pull the clip forward too release the trim.

Zac, can you post a real good sharp pic of the clips?
So I know wtf I'm doing if and when the day comes.
I've removed that trim a few times but I CRS...
