Hi all

Im trying to locate the engine number. I've found a 5 digit number that matches up with the vin. Is this the engine number?

I've also found digits on both sides of the block that are the same and I assume are casting numbers?

Also did the 66 fury have fender plates? I've got a vehicle no that is obviously the vin bit no other plates.

Cheers

Yes the '66 came with a fender tag. You can look for a build sheet if yours is missing. Post pictures of the casting numbers you found so we can better help you, please.
For example, a 383 will have the casting number 2468130. Is that what you are trying to find out?

The second casting here is the build date.

How would I do that?

second casting here is the build

Mine has the exact same casting number. Didn't see the build date below it so I'll have to check it out when I'm home.

I'm interested in the engine number for registration purposes. It is interesting finding out details about the car though.

A 66 model year engine should not have the VIN stamped on the block. Can you post a picture of the numbers you found?

Look under the back seat top and bottom, the front seats, above the glove box, and under the carpet. And a '66 engine will not have the vin on it.

Nicely detailed, painted manifolds and oil filter, just like OEM.
Thanks! :)

This is the number I found that sits under the dizzy.

The 5 digits match the last 5 of the VIN.

also my casting number matches yours, 2468130-4.

unfortunately the headers block the build date. ill have to get under the car to get a better look sometime.

however, im still trying to locate the engine number for registration purposes. i cant use the casting number obviously as its not unique to this block, unlike an engine number

Those are not typical factory stampings. It appears as if someone has stamped them on the block.

Let's back up...

What is the history of the car?
At which plant was it built?
How long has it been in Oz?
How long have you had it?
Could someone have stamped the numbers on the block before you bought it to meet local or government regulations?

it was built at Hamtramck Michigan.

ive owned it for nearly 3 years, not sure how long the person who had it before me, pretty sure he was the one who imported it.

unfortunently thats all the information i have until i look under the seats etc as someone mentioned above. havent got much time lately so only doing what i can here and there

I don't know what to tell you other than what has already been posted.

Chrysler did not stamp a VIN on an engine until '68.
When they did stamp the VIN in '68 it was on the back of the block near the oil sending unit.
In 69, they moved the VIN stamping to a pad on the passenger's side of the block near the front.
Those are not factory stamps. Someone has put them there after the car left the factory.

I've heard tell that some country's require the VIN to be stamped into the engine before a car can be registered there.

And that could be the case here. The previous owner may have done it in order to register the car.

thanks for the replies.

ill try to get some more information of the history of the car

little update, i spent some time and searched the block and found under the dizzy B383 3 11 (then it has 87207 under)

i assume that means 1966 383 11th of march casting date?

is there any other numbers on the block that are unique to that block?

sorry if these questions are dumb, never owned an old car before.

also someone mentioned a build sheet earlier? how would i obtain one?

The build sheet will be found somewhere in your car if it exists at all. Usually under the rear seat springs, front seats, under the carpet etc..

3 11 is the engine assembly date.

To the best of my recollection, the most accurate thing that you find for an engine identification for a '66 is the stamp under the distributor. If you clear away the paint/build-up on the pad you will find numbers like "B 383" or "B 440". The "B" denotes the year 1966. What comes after is more obvious!
