Tilt wheels for dummies!

Anyone know any reason I can't replace 4 speed column on a 65 Sport Fury with a Tilt column?

Does it have to be stick tilt column or can I convert automatic stick column?

I see no reason why you could not simply bolt in a floor shift 65 tilt column in a 4 speed car. I did that on my automatic 65 Sport Fury (floor shift). Nothing to it, really. Unbolted the non-tilt column, then bolted in the tilt column. Everything hooked up like it came that way. (I got a tilt from another 65 Sport Fury, a 66 will probably work as well-not certain if other years will.)

Here is the quandary of what you ask. 1965, 1966 columns use a different upper mounting than 1967 - 1969. 1970 and up have the locking column. You might be able to use one from if you measure all the mounting points and they match.
This might be a good one to contact Flaming River and see if one of theirs would work.

Was there a way to remove automatic shift quadrant from that column?

I don't know about those years but on 68/9 B body columns you can change the collar to a floor shift collar. Perhaps on these also but I haven't really looked at them

I am not sure what you are asking. My original column and the tilt column were both for a floor shift car (automatic). I don't have anything related to the shifter on either column. The column shift cars have an indicator but it is in the speedometer housing, not on the column.
I had nothing to remove or change, just unbolted the original steering column and bolted in the tilt column. My 65 Fury has factory automatic floor shift with console.

Well obviously that makes it easy. See part two of his question

Does it have to be stick tilt column or can I convert automatic stick column?

and his follow up

I take it he's wanting to know if he can convert an automatic on the column to a floor shift column.

Anyone know if you can just use a collar from his stick column on the tilt column?

I assume not and that he'd need the collar from a tilt / floor shift column

My experience is with '67 Tilt-O-Scope columns.

Any parts interchanging has to be tilt to tilt and/or fixed to fixed. The two columns are different beasts.

I thought about doing what tdenkler is asking, (swapping the floor shift collar for the column shift collar) but the entire column has to be disassembled to do it.

I decided against that adventure and waited it out for a floor shift column. I got lucky and found a parts car with console and buckets that I swapped into my Silver Custom.

Hope the input helps.

Did ma mopar even offer tilt on 65 4 speed's?

Yes, you would need a 65-66 column for that reason, but actually I think he specifically needs a 65 column. I have heard that the baseplate to the firewall differs from 65-66, which would make sense due to 65 being cableshift and 66 is lever. The shifting 'exit' of a column-shift AT is very different between 65 and 66. But I think if you had several columns you could disassemble into what you need, as the tilt and straight columns have similar appearance, probably from same vendor. The later tilt columns were made by Saginaw (GM!) and were totally different from Chrysler columns.

Was there a way to remove automatic shift quadrant from that column?
I took a 65 column-shift AT apart years ago and the cables were a PITA to take off. But you could use it - then maybe trade a floorshift collar onto it?

I don't know if they did, but also why they wouldn't, my 300L has tilt and floorshift AT, so 4-sp would be the same column.

65 and 66 tilt columns are completely different beasts. The 65 one is related to the non tilt 65 Chrysler column, with a lot of differences. 66 tilt columns are a completely different Saginaw sourced tilt and telescope unit; pretty identical to the GM car pieces down to the steering wheel. Nothing interchanges between 65 and 66. I wonder if some parts from a GM car might be substituted

Mr Hotrod - joined almost 6 years ago and only 10 messages (!), and this one is pretty knowledgable. Get with the program and contribute more often!!! :poke: :D

So is there a tilt-only column for 66?

Im sort of like Mr. Ed from the old TV program; only speak when I have something to say. I also bought a floor shift tilt column by mistake once, I can take pictures of components for you. The 65 was odd due to the remnants of the cable shift system, I am not sure what else may be different.

66 and 67 use a common Saginaw colums and floor shift and (automatic 300's) were common. I asssume there is one. I think if you get the entire unit including the floor plate you cna make one work, but only since I really doubt they made changes to the floor stamping; changing brackets was easier.
