NOS GT exhaust tips

Wasn't there the argument that the 300 Hurst only had tips on the promo/show cars? Not that it should prevent you from putting them on....

I'm curious to find out too, I really thought those tips were only used on the 1970 GT?

70 exhaust tips left cuda right Fury GT.jpg

Left Cuda, right GT

Just how many NOS parts did Dan actually hoard .......nice find and nice buy

Looks like two differences. The mounting bracket and the pipe.

Looks like the bracket was added before the chrome extensions and after the hot dip aluminizing . Good engineering there too. There's a hole for the bracket that it slips through so it can be spot welded in place. That way if (when) the spot weld breaks, the pipe won't droop.

The easy way to duplicate that would be to weld a bracket to the top. It would be hidden (I assume) so that's not a bad way. Cutting a rectangular hole for the bracket and spot welding wouldn't be that hard either.

The pipe would probably be easy for someone that can bend exhaust pipe, although duplicating the coating might be tough.

It would depend on the level of your restoration I guess, but I think a pretty good duplicate could be made with a repop pipe.

BTW, those are Challenger, not 'Cuda.

If you're going to hack a set of costly B/E tips, you're better off starting from scratch with cheap universals.

I don't think the Challenger tips are that expensive. Dale's sells them for $240 for a pair versus $1200 for a pair of NOS tips.

Here again... it's the level of restoration. If you are doing a high $$ resto, those $1200 tips will be perfect. For most guys, a set of repop Challenger tips and some work would get them the same appearance as original.

For someone that just wants a set of tips that look kinda like the real ones, but don't want to spend the time and money, then yea... hack away on the JC Whitney ones shown.

That's a bargain compared to that used underwear from the Fuhrer's wife.

Are those for the same side?
Don't know, that picture is the one Billy Fury had on his GT site. I think the normal routing for exhaust pipes is inboard of the springs along the gas tank. The '71 Fury GT seems to break the rules, the pipe passes outward over the springs and the runs outboard of the springs. That's why the GT tip has the hanger and the offsets in the input plumbing. There were a number of questions about this strange routing when it was shown in CanCritter's '71 GT restoration.
My guess is both the tips in Billy Fury's picture are right side.

I don't believe that is the correct routing for those exhaust pipes.

I didn't either until Paul's exhaust guy dug up a factory pipe than runs from the muffler to the tip. It still had the factory part number and the Parts List agreed. The only way it would fit was down the frame rail, over the spring and then parallel to the outboard side of the frame. I looked it over on Critter's car and it sure looks happy with the strange route. It also places the tips further apart and, I think, they look better than mine which follow the frame rail.
