hi all,

my 66 fury runs a 383 with a 4bbl carter carb but ive had a cold start problem since ive had the car, ie it wont start when cold.

i put a bit of petrol in the carb and it starts. when i bought the car it wouldnt run off the fuel tank. i cleaned out the fuel tank and lines, had the carb rebuilt and still had the same issue.

starts fine when warm, i can drive around. pull over, let the car sit for an hour or 2, and it will start fine. let it sit for 4+ hours and i imagine the fuel evaporates and it wont start without pouring some fuel into the carb.

im thinking the accelerator pump is the issue, maybe some debris is restricting fuel? but when im driving i dont notice any lag/performance issues that i would expect if acclerator pump was dodgy.

ive also replaced fuel filters and fuel pump.

Does the choke work? Remove the air cleaner, open the choke blade, look down the carb throat and move the throttle lever, any fuel spraying from the accelerator pump nozzle? Do this when the engine is cold. If there is no fuel than it has evaporated or leaked into the intake manifold.
Will it start if you crank it a little longer and give the fuel pump time to fill the float bowl while giving it a couple of pumps?

there is no fuel spraying from the accelerator pump when ive tried this.
ive try cranking it for a good few minutes but still doesnt want to turn over.

I had the exact same issue, but with an eddie carb, - it was clogged squirters.
unblocking the squirters something i can do? or am i better off taking to someone. never dicked around with carbs before but would enjoy the experience of learning if this isnt too hard.

thanks for the replies btw guys, been very helpful!

If you get a kit it comes with a exploded view, that will help with reassembly. If your really uncomfortable with it take it to someone who knows carbs, a lot of new guy's entering the repair world have never seen a carb or worked on one.

if you are mechanical, or technical, go for it.

if you wear a suit and tie to work, send it out for repair.

I say shelf it and buy an eddie and bolt it on and go enjoy a drive.

try not to die -

If the idea of a rebuild unnerves you a ton, take it to someone or slap an eddy on....
I'll say tho, I've done a ton of carbs and actually find it enjoyable. A girlfriend of mine once had a 74 Cutlass with a gummed up Quadrapuke, which in my opinion is a horrible pain in the *** to work with and she, having never so much as started a lawnmower, successfully rebuilt the carb in a few hours so don't be too put off by the task.
Just be sure to keep the parts cleaner out of your eyes.

thanks again guys, i may youtube a video and see how difficult it is.

im an electrician so i have some technical knowledge, just never work on carbies before.
