Any experience here in getting custom parts made?

I'll see what the shop says tomorrow. My neighbor restores a lot of old cars. He thought a piece of sheet metal formed around a mandrel the welded together at the flat end would do it. The 'official' way I think would be to extrude it from a die like a pipe. I thought about crushing a tube but I would have to have a decent size press to compress it evenly.

All things I might have to try yet.

Update from the shop: He took a piece of sheetmetal. Bent it, shaped it, tig welded it, ground it. Looks like a perfect fit. A tad heavier gauge metal but I will take it. It is all labor. He wants 75-80$ a piece and I will still have to chrome them. I need 4. I said I will take 8. If I needed them, more people do. As I called around for parts all I heard was 'so and so beat you to them'.

So now I will have a perfect luggage rack, a second near-perfect luggage rack, and some spare parts made from unobtainuim.

Nice! That's not a bad price really. Of course you will still have to have them chromed but still.

I saw an NOS cross bar, not likely as 'rare' as one of the front V's, and it was $70 and, of course sold anyway, so 80$+ chrome (30-40 on a new part I am guessing) and it is fine. I gives me an entire second luggage rack 'kit' too.

Got my parts today. Had 8 made. They are going for chrome. I will use 4 right away. I have some to sell the next time someone goes looking for them. Everyone I called said 'good luck'

I am duly impressed... Thanks for sharing the process. I suppose eventually you will either need to make more, or give your fabricator the hot tip on these parts. I for one, am interested to hear how fast the world beats down your inbox looking for these.
