Opinions please: Spread bore or square bore on 440?

There has been many discussions on FCBO about TQ vs Eddie carbs and manifolds. TQ's are difficult to tune and Eddie's are pretty much ready to go out of the box.

If you are bolting an Eddie on to a stock spread bore manifold...Eddie recommends using this adapter. If you are using an Eddie Performer Manifold....use the thin carb adapter that comes in the manifold box.

Call the Eddie tech line and they will tell you the same thing....

You will only need a 600 Eddie on the low compression smog 440 engine. The 750 is just unnecessary overkill with a 200 HP 440 in a 4000-5000 lb C-Body.

The 600 Eddie rightout of the box on my 440 outperformed my 750 TQ.

The '68/9 is far right and the one on the far left is for '70/1. The 2 in the middle are almost worthless but I can't get myself to scrap them.

Yes, that is true. But the middle intakes have such a low profile that if a tree falls on the hood of your car, the old narrow bolt pattern AFB and the air cleaner will still fit under the crushed hood.

I'd rather not put your idea to a test if you don't mind. :wideyed:

Yes, these are necessary if you are using a spreadbore intake. Don't listen to the salesperson who says you need them regardless. I've put Performer intakes and Eddy carbs on three motors, two 440s and one AMC 401. No adapter was necessary.

I will give this note of caution though, watch the use of an adapter in a fusey. It can raise the carb and air cleaner to a point where it will make contact with your hood when you close it. Be careful!

That is the second reason I am changing. My dual snorkel won't fit with the edelbrock perched upon the adapter

A stock spreadbore manifold WITH THE SQUARE BORE ADAPTER can still use the stock air cleaner and clear the hood with no problems.

It works. As using the dual snorkel was part of my dilemma, and it clears the hood, I'm going to leave well enough alone. The car runs well. Thanks everyone. I'm on to doing some detailing under the hood now.

Depends Stan. I put a spacer on my car - the hood would not close without damaging it. On some cars this might be true, but on my '70 Newport there was simply no room.
