I'm starting to gather up stroker motor parts for my 1978 NYB. I'm going to stroke a 400 to 451. Nothing really crazy and I'll be able to still drive it anywhere on pump gas. I bought a running 400 in Indiana. Compression will be a little under 10:1. My plan is buy Edlebrock Performer cylinder heads. They are available in 75 cc, 84 cc, and 88 cc. I'm undecided on which ones i want to get. Which one would you choose and why?
 
What piston are you going to use?
 
You'll need to decide based on the compression ratio you want with the pistons you will use. Smaller chamber size means more compression.

If your going 10:1 go with the 84cc closed chamber. A closed chamber head is less prone to detonation. 440 Source sells 451 stroker kits but I would suggest going with the larger displacement 470 stroker kit for the same price. You shouldn't have to grind anything off the crankcase to get the 470 kit to clear the block. I built a 470 a few years ago from a 400 out of a 73 Newport and the build went together really easy. Its been about 5 years and plenty of miles and the motor is still holding up. Whether you choose to go with the 470 or stick with the 451 I would highly suggest going with 440 Source. They offer a variety of different pistons with their kits to help get you the compression you desire and they have excellent costumer service. I have called them for advice on numerous occasions and the tech help is highly knowledgeable and friendly.
 
I believe I'll be somewhere close to 9.8:1. I was leaning toward the 84cc heads. I'm getting the stroker kit from 440 Source. I talked to their tech line once so far. I'll ask about the 470 kit. I'm just in the preliminary planning stage. I still have to figure out which cam I want to go with. I do know that it will be a Mopar Performance cam. I'm open minded enough to listen to all suggestions before pulling the trigger.
 
I have a 470 stroker in my dart . The guy I bought it from had just reworked the bottom end. He was 11/1 with worked 906 heads . I didn't want to mix fuel so he bought the heads back and I bought Edelbrock E Street open chamber , brought me down to 10/1. Be careful on the stroker kits they don't always work as advertised.
 
Sorry, I looked over my notes. With the 84cc heads and 4.375" pistons. Compression on the 451 will be 9.85 and the 470 would be 9.58.

Yeah, I hear you. I definitely want to be below 10/1 when it's all said and done.

Also knowing how anti headers you guys are, most aftermarket heads are angled plugs which almost definitely not work with manifolds

Bob the 470 should be higher, bigger displacement into same size CC
 
Assuming the stroker kit comes with a flat top piston, there is no need for an 88cc open chamber aluminum head. Also assuming the pistons will be zero deck or close to it a 75cc in the case of a 5000 lb. Car with a highway gear 3.23 or numerically lower, will be to tight of a chamber,considering the near stock ( lots of cylinder pressure) cam you'll need for drivability. 84cc head but don't buy your head gaskets until second to last. Pushrods being last. Imo
 
Something else, and no one likes to hear this. I bought a pair of edelbrocks and took them to a machine shop. Out of the box the worst valve seat was .005 out of round. The machinist said he had a pair of brand new dart heads that were .012 on the worst seat. I'm just saying when you're that deep into a build don't take anything for granted. Imagine a brand new engine with leaking valves! It's a good idea to have the brand new $2000 heads checked out. I know,that sucks.

Bob: Are you gonna use that 268 degree MOPAR Purple cam?
 
Dont put Mopar purple cam. There is more modern and better cams.

I'm not sure I agree with your statement. I have heard a lot of opinions about the MOPAR Purple cams - some pro and some con. Seems to me that since they were designed by Chrysler engineers, they oughta work pretty well in the engines for which they were intended (383, 440, etc.).

In their day. The world has moved on to some dual pattern cams well suited for a heavy car.
