1978 NY Brougham - Need Advise - Comments - New Owner

Thank you.

More proof that 'scheduled' production date is not the actual assembly date. The tag says 119 (scheduled for January 19th) but the door sticker says February 1. The car was 10 days 'late' for some reason.

Here are the photos of the door jam VIN info, the VIN Plate and the trailer hitch. It turns out to be a Drawtite from 1981, (paperwork fond in bag on hitch) so it is not a "factory" item as I was told.
Thank you, that is the factory style I have been watching for. Not that I need it, or can even use it on the current fleet. Since I can't find one, I want one even more. Neat that the bag was still there intact.

Union break......LOL.

Steve, did that Drawtite paperwork have a part number for the hitch?

Steve, I think I drive pretty close by you on I-294 on my trips from Baltimore to Milwaukee/Green Bay.

I do not know if it made a difference regarding the assembly date, but there was a huge blizzard in 1978 starting on January 24 thru 27th. That may explain the lose in a few days. It is not like today where corporate America does not stop production for anything.

The part number on the hitch is M0137-LS. I will get a copy of it up once I can get is scanned.

I live in Buffalo Grove about 1-1/2 miles from 53 and Dundee Road. I work at Underwriters Laboratories right off I-294 and Lake Cook Road. If you are driving by and you want to see the car, we can make arrangements to meet in the area.

I also have the green IBM computer punch card "build sheet" in the glove box. Did these punch cards usually come with a new car back in the day. I do not recall seeing them in any of the cars we had in that time period.

It sounds like you have some substantial paperwork with this car

Post a pic. It could be an inspection card. I don't think I've heard of IBM punch card build docs in the 70's.

Hi All.

I recently purchased a garage kept 1978 NY Hardtop with 17K miles and I would like your comments on certain items I am not yet familiar with on this car. She is a 440 with Shur-grip, trailer package, elec. rear window defroster, all leather with dual pwr seats in front. CB/AM/FM Radio, vent windows, trunk release, tilt-telescoping steering wheel and cornering lights.

I replaced the original Firestone 721 tires of death with Hankook H724 75 235 R15, (group's recommendation) and kept the full size org spare, so that is done. She has the heavy duty-trailer package, so there are air shocks in the rear, which are dead. What have you found to be a good brand replacement for the fronts and rears? KYB, Monroe's?

There is a serious exhaust leak from a gasket near the front, by the exhaust component that has the ports for the ERG tube. Where can I find a replacement for it?

Since the A/C is in such nice shape, my guy said I can replace the gaskets and fill with R-12 or convert to R-134. I was thinking on keeping it R-12. Comments? It does not have the dreaded Air Temp II.

The pneumatic automatic parking brake release only works in N and D, is it designed not to operate in reverse?

I have ordered a shop manual, but has anyone had an issue where both the cornering lights and the rear back up lamps do not light? All bulbs are good.

What type of cleaner can you all recommend to clean the door panels to remove the slight amount of dark matter in the decorative molded crinkle finish. Just old age dirt. Regular soap and water with a small stiff brush did not do too much.

Going to start clay bar cleaning the paint, just the hood should keep me out of trouble for a week or so.

Thanks in advance - looking forward to your comments - it is an active group.

Steve

There is a factory option of rear air shocks, a control valve, air reservoir and vacuum powered compressor that mounts in the engine compartment forward of the battery. If you have the valve, reservoir and compressor, you're golden!

Thank you.

Terrific! That "scheduled' production date is, as I have been trying to tell people, the body frame date. The Munroney label on the side window will have the official finished date of production. That will be some time in February to coincide with the MDH label on the end of the driver's door.

The scheduled date is just that...an administrative date the car was scheduled to start production. Construction may or may not have started that date based on production capabilities or supplies.

I could schedule 200 cars that are supposed to be painted green, but if you, the paint guy, doesn't have any green paint until next week, there's no reason to have 200 shells clogging up the space. We'll just make them next week.
