Been educating myself on auto transmission performance and function and had a couple questions after reading my Shop manual and stall converter posts and ads.:
1. Does a stall converter directly replace the factory torque converter?
2. In terms of actual driving/response, what difference would i see/feel between factory 727 and one with a 2500 stall in a 383 with just a 4 barrel and aluminum intake? Thanks

#1 Yes (all converters have a stall)
#2 not much.
Converters should be matched to the engines power band. A 2500 stall is not much & will stall different in different engines & combo's. If you go to CRT's site (Cope Racing Transmissions) he has a form you fill out so he can build you the correct converter. It asked a lot of questions. It will give you an idea on how cams & RPM & engines intended usage will affect the converter. Also heavy towing often benefits from a converter change.

If you take a stock 383-2 bbl engine, say in 1969 or 1970 with its stock lower stall speed converter and swap in a higher stall speed one of even 2300, I believe the feel of the car would improve dramatically, especially off the line driving around town. The stock 383-4 engine in Plymouths and Dodges come with the higher stall converters, and while the cams in the 383-2 vs 383-4 aren't that much different, the use of the higher stall converters in the 4 bbl engines makes them drive so much more responsively than the 383-2s with the lower stall converters. The 383-4 bbl packages also have the 3.23 axle ratio instead of the 2.7 for the 2 bbl, but that doesn't seem to add a lot either, but a little. Yes, the 4 bbl and dual exhaust help too, but I believe the higher stall converter changes the overall feel of the car the most. I have had both and while the 383-2 stock set up is smooth, it feels much like a dog really, while the 383-4 package feels actually lively. But your fuel consumption will suffer with the higher stall speed converter too. But for my older cars, I don't care about the latter. And all the 360-2 bbl C bodies in these years used the higher stall speed converters, and that is what made them feel almost equivalent to the 383-4 bb. packages in the cars I have had with both.

Im trying to determine if it is worth spending the money on while ive got it apart. im not sure how deep i'll get in the engine as of yet, but at a minimum, will be a 4bbl.

I would talk to some TQ companies. Tell them what you are wanting to do. They can best answer your questions. John Cope is a regular on Facebook. Seems to have a lot of happy customers & he's a MOPAR dude
