Let's see some Wagons!

That looks solid. I think all us wagon people ought to get together and petition the restoration companies to start making 'our' parts again. I really want a new interior plastic quarter panel cover for the cargo area. Amazes me how many interior carpet color options they offered back then, in comparison to today's 'griege or black?' choices. Roll on! PS Hankook Optimos are affordable white walls at Walmart.

71 Polara Custom wagon that I picked up about 2 months ago. 440 was pulled for a Cuda project, but there's a decent chance I can get it back. Very solid car with no rust other than the surface of the rear cargo area where it held water for a bit. I'm torn on whether to do road wheels or the cool Polara caps that everyone seems to be talking about recently. Either way it desperately needs a set of whitewalls.

Which code tells you the paint color and which one is the engine code?

It looks happy it didn't go to a Derby...cringe... saving a piece of American history...

Which code tells you the paint color and which one is the engine code?

For the engine, it is entered twice on the tag.

The car's VIN, entered on the bottom row, is DL45 T1D 184xxx. The "T" is for the engine - 440-cid V8, 1-4bbl carb

Also on the bottom line, at the left side, is "E85". That is also for the engine - 440-cid V8, 1-4bbl carb

The exterior colour code is entered twice on the tag - once for the body colour and the second for the roof -
1) second row, first entry on the left - the body colour - GB2 -Light blue.
2) third row, first entry on the left - the roof colour - GB2 -Light blue.

The interior paint colour is the 2nd row, 3rd spot from the left - GB2 The "L2B2" between the body colour and interior paint colour is L2B2 - the interior trim code (L- low trim grade, 2 - vinyl bench seats. B2 - light blue).

The "G" on the various colour codes is for the Engineering Dept's model year code for 1971, and is the year that particular shade was introduced. The "B" is blue while the "2" is for the shade where "1" is light and "9" is dark.

If your plastic panels and/or trim parts have a grain texture molded in, as many do, a good alternative is to locate vinyl material with similar grain and color and apply it to your existing panel. Just the vinyl, no padding.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't know where I could get similar material. Is that a J.C. Whitney, Grainger, IKEA, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, eBay, Walmart, or Amazon thing?

E63 must mean 400 2bbl.
JB9 = dark blue?
? = Interior trim code...? Has plush vinyl, manual windows, manual seats. I am assuming an "M" in there somewhere means "Medium". 73 Monaco.

NO......... You need to confer with a local auto trim shop, or perhaps SMS or Original interiors. They will send samples. It should be no problem matching the color and grain with your plastic panels.

Trim code S8L3...?

The body and roof are JB9 - 1973 - Blue - Dark. It is also metallic.
Interior colour is HL4 - Parchment (1972 - yellow whites - mid shade)
E63 - 400-cid V8, 1-2 bbl, with N95 (Emission Control System - ECS)
D34 - Standard duty Torqueflite
S8L3 - Interior Trim -
S - Trim Grade - Sport
8 - Seat & Trim Style - 50/50 Vinyl Bench
L3 - Colour - Parchment
The "615" is the scheduled build date - June 15, 1973.

Options listed on the tag :
C58 - 50/50 bench seat
G11 - Tinted glass windows - all
H52 - Heater with dual control A/C
L21 - Cargo compartment lamp
N88- Auto speed control
N95 - Emission Control System - ECS
P44 - Power lock - tailgate
R11 - AM Music Master radio
Y14 - Sold car

Hey thanks a lot for all the info! Y14 Sold car - does that mean it was ordered 'as optioned'? Thanks again. It seems strange that a car would have dual AC and speed control options, but not electric windows or seats...or a 440... I guess it was an era where crank windows were still the norm.

I live in the sticks (sort of) so the brick and mortar shopping options one would associate with a metro area are not near me. I will google SMS and 'Original Interiors'. The only thing (catalog) I have heard of is Year One and other sites I've visited online don't have much....if it's an E-body or a Camaro or Mustang you can find everything. Not so much, for a wagon. I'll dig some more. Thanks

You will need auto/boat upholstery specific suppliers. The aftermarket and used/NOS parts folks won't help you.
You'll be surprised at how well this method works. Much easier to maintain too.

Thanks again for all the detail. You have obviously spent a lot of time studying this stuff.

Yes, the Sold Car means there is a buyer waiting for his new car to be built and delivered. The buyer has placed an order with the options, colours wanted, and probably paid a deposit. And the wait began.

The 1970's was still an era of cars being ordered with few high end options. Suspect the original owner of your car did a lot of travelling, thus the dual AC, speed control, power lock on the tailgate, and 50/50 bench. Even the radio was an option back then.

Crank windows? My 1988 Plymouth Caravelle Salon (Gran Fury Salon to those outside of Canada) has crank windows, no A/C, no power locks, no cruise control and only a driver side exterior mirror. Speed control is the one option I wish it had. Passenger side mirror is the other.

Is there any way to decode a carpet color? Did they get that specific?

Is there any way to decode a carpet color? Did they get that specific?

Checking the parts book, the carpet colour code is HL5 -
H - Engineering code for model year 1972 - the year that shade was introduced. 1973 lists carpet colours from 1971 (G) and 1973 (J). Not unusual to carry colours forward if they are popular.
L - Colour - Beige / Parchment
5 - Shade, where 1 is light and 9 is dark. So 5 is mid way.
