I am thinking about getting my original AM radio converted to AM/FM and maybe Bluetooth. Any recommendations on who to use from people who have done this conversion?
Thanks

http://garytayman.com/ has a very good reputation and has done a few for guys on this forum.

I'm sending one to him next week.

If you send it anywhere else, be sure they use the Aurora conversion and not the AAR conversion.

To piggyback on this thread. What have you guys done regarding speakers? My car has a single 6x9 in back and either the same or 4x10 in the dash. Does splitting the stereo 2 channel, front to back, work best? Or the smaller dual speakers front and back for 4 channel stereo?

I went with 2 smalls up front and 2 new modern 6 x 9s in the back and it sounds fantastic.
Here’s the tech installing the new rears.

I was kind of limited for the convertible, so I did a small speaker plate for the front and then did a RetroSound dual coil 6x9 for the rear. The dual coil 6 x 9 has two small tweeters mounted on top of the 6 x 9. The tweeters are split left and right and the 6 x 9 woofer is shared. It's not the greatest, but it's good for my convertible.

I also have a Boss powered sub woofer under the seat that helps quite a bit.

Thanks Matt.
I need to take a look at my rear window defogger. It takes up one of my speaker openings. What’s your techs schedule look like?

Thanks John.
That might be my answer. Went with the dual small speakers up front in my gto conv. Nice and clear but they needed a bigger speaker for some oomph, Never got around to mounting speakers under the seats as i planned.
I expect Gary Tayman can help me pick some speaker when i send him my radio.

Thanks Matt.

I had the same problem, now my defogger is in a box. I’ll check my tech’s schedule.

I did the Aurora conversion AM/FM with MP3. 2 4”speakers upfront and 2 6x9s out back.
Very happy with it.

The smaller front speakers need a "baffle arrangement" for the best low freq response. Not in "free air", per se.

Pioneer used to make smaller front speaker add-ons. Black boxes smaller than a 3x5 note card and about an inch high for remote mounting/placing. Many people placed them at the outer corners of the instrument panel upper surface (might use Velcro?), to fill in the gap between the louder rear 6x9s. Some just ran the rear 6x9s only.

Best thing is to get a close as you can to the factory 4-speaker situation, but this might also require driving the front speakers much harder than the rear speakers, via the f/r balance control, comparatively. On the GM cars with a front and rear speaker only, one for each channel, always felt like I should be sitting sideways for best results. But then I come from the "Right and Left channel" era, rather than the later "boombox" era.

Thanks for that link, Big_John. A spacious area for the tech to work in!

71 B bodies split the stereo the GM way but only two speakers. Just didn’t sound right.

I did 4" side by side front and back in my '66 and a subwoofer in the trunk. I used Gary too, would highly recommend him.

I may have to get creative with the rear defog fan. 6x9s sound like the way to go if i can.

Not that hard to have both the rear defog and dual speakers on a 65, especially with the Monaco style package shelf.

Since you could get both rear speakers and a defogger at the same time there is a factory bracket that accommodates both. I looked on the web for it using the part number out of the ‘68 Parts book and had no luck but I never checked with Murray which reminds me, he owes me.....
My buddy has one out of a fuselage Chrysler but it was very different.

Great info/thread guys! Thanks! Looking at getting a CB radio to go back into the D300. It originally had one, but is long gone. Wonder if they would be able to convert it, and retain the cb function.

If you guys don’t mind me asking... what was the price for the conversion? I’d be looking for am/fm functions, as well as aux input, and bluetooth if possible....

Was going to just get a modern aftermarket radio for it, but think the original cb radio would be much cooler! Looks like somebody stole, or got real pissed at the original radio at one point. The cluster is all busted up where the radio used to be. Need to get a new cluster as well.....

Call Gary Tayman and ask him. He's a really nice guy to talk to. He has an old T-Bird.

Prices are on his website. http://garytayman.com/stereo.htm

My radio is on its way back from conversion. I should get it in a couple days.
